Does Tis Look Legit?

So I've noticed this on ebay, near me and ending tomorrow with no bids

It's a lovely colour and has full MOT, yet because of a minor knock on the front he's listed it as spares or repairs. The advert states there's nothing wrong and it drives fine, yet there's something about it that just doesn't sound right. Won't have a chance to look at it and am only considering throwing a cheeky bid in tomorrow if the price stays low. Opinions?

Personally, the spares or repairs line I feel is often trotted out when they know there's something expensive about to go, and even though it's a private sale you might be a bit miffed with them. "Well, I did advertise it for spares"....

That said, if you go with an open mind and give it a complete check-over then I don't see that you can go wrong. Anything they might know is about to fail (clutch, HG etc) will present itself to you. Maybe they're just going on the advice of a friend who doesn't like them, and sees a dented one as a waste of time.

If that was closer to me I'd risk 400 notes on that without seeing it. The stuff some people think is "scrap" is beyond belief sometimes. Even if he thinks it is about to go badly wrong, it is worth that on the bridge if you separate it into parts instead of being lazy and weighing the car as a whole (cat, alloys as wheels, engine/box as irony alloy, alt and starter as motors, wiring as cable etc... I bet you could even sell those tyres)

That's how I see cars anyway. sum of parts. Bonus if it is a goodun and you get some miles out of it, lol.

The thing is, non turbo MR2s of that era (i.e. UK cars) are worth two tenths of fuck all, and that's coming from someone who owns a 480.

I agree, if it's repairable and you genuinely think it's worth a pop, go for it. Just don't go expecting a minter and being horrified by the lack of fuel it has in the tank.

Failing that, break it! You'd get money back for the interior parts, maybe £75-100 for the alloys, £100 for the engine, and so on.

But I live in Leatherhead, and may well be talking pish.

Despite the fact I'm the shittest photographer of ever, even I could be arsed to move a car to take a picture of the back. Something doesn't quite seem right about that listing as you intimated, can't put my finger on it but alarm bells are ringing.

You could get a pretty nice one for a grand, particularly worth it if you can get a Japanese-spec one with the "mature sporty personal" sticker which bangs on about dandism and all sorts.

He messaged me back guaranteeing no chassis damage and that he only as he doesn't consider it perfect. However two different bidders have now placed bids so it may well start shooting up. Always fancied one of these but 90% are red and I don't want another red car (it's my least favourite colour yet I've owned more red cars than anything else so need to get the other colours up a bit. This makes perfect sense in my head.)
