Agreed, I read most of the classic car magazines we get delivered here, and there is sometimes nothing in it, it feels like youre reading a massive catalogue. Retro cars seems to sell well, we usually sell all three copies we get in, that may sound like nothing, but its very rare for us to sell every copy we get in. We have a few customers who always buy the higher end classic magazines too, such as Octane or CSC, they have a reliable fanbase, but some of the other ones seem to be trying to attract the sort of person who doesnt know anything about cars into them, I can understand that you need to somehow expand your fanbase appeal but at the same time, dumbing down will always scare away the readers who wanted to be informed, and not read the same old same old.

I won't be mourning it's loss on the shelves.

I'm sure I bought a copy or two of it back in the very late nineties, before I had a licence, just to see what it was all about. Once I realised it was all about idiots spending five figure sums on chavved-up, plastic-tastic bodykitted supermini's and the like, I very quickly lost all interest in it.

Thanks to that magazine, we now have a generation of people who think it's cool to fit dustbin lid exhausts to Micras, ill-fitting bodykits to Saxo's, four figure valued stereo systems in the boots of Corsa's and Fiestas sprayed lime green...

People were making cars rubbish before Max Power and I'm sure they'll continue to make them rubbish after it.

I remember buying the very first copy, in fact I still have a copy of the first issue and some other very early ones, as well as featuring some typical wide-bodied shit that was all the rage in the mid nineties they also featured some good stuff, the first issue features a pair of Rover SD1 Vitesses owned by two engine builders at J.E Engineering who were and are perhaps the best Rover V8 builders. A few other early issues I have also featured a camshaft test for Rover V8s, a tastefully modified Mini and a very nice Capri so not all of it was utter shite in the begining.

I seem to remember Redline being even worse for changing from a proper petrolhead's mag to another boy-racer mag, my first issue of that features all kinds of glorious tat and it continued to feature few old yankmobiles, Capris, SD1s, Mk2 Granadas etc etc then it just completely changed direction.

I just wouldn't buy a copy of Octane though, I'm sure its very well written but I'm just not interested in rare 1965 one-off racing Ferrraris, Maseratis or Astons worth millions, just not my bag at all.

The last time I saw Max Power on the shelf I was suprised by the choice of cover car so assumed they might have changed a bit but I guess they had to since the whole retro movement has really kicked off over the last few years, young people now drive old modified cars because they think old stuff is cool whereas it was once just a case of not being able to afford much else.

Revs did a similar turnaround, from features like taking 3 fast cars (Nissan Saliva, Sierra XR4i and Jaguuar XJS IIRC) under £1500 to Knockhill, and reviewing new hot hatches, to another boy-racer mag.

Was it Max Power that had the Wally Column for a while? The ones I remember were the reader who wanted to put eight sidepipes on his CVH Escort and another who wanted to put a Jag V12 in his Capri. The letters usually contained a request not to put them in the Wally Column.

I remember a pathetic attempt by them to keep with the times by featuring "shat look" cars.

Annoyingly I think a Beetle that was in that feature "beats" one of my vehicles to the lowest powered ever to appear in the magazine.

lol that would annoy.

I recall some Max Power back in the late 90s but the only magazine I really care for now is Banzai, and even that is because of Alexi Smith's "man in japan" page/blog.

Plus I sem to be a total wannabe lifestyle drifter nowadays.... :|
