Quick quezzie - E39 expansion tanks

Mine has just let go (blew the bottom seal, not split). Are these tanks separate to the radiator, or will I need the whole thing? I can see them for sale on the internet, but there must be some experience here to help me plan a realistic outcome. (1998 528i)

I had a look at this site but it isn't quite clear, might depend on year.

Get the last seven digits of your chassis number and pop them into the box asking for serial number and the bmw parts world is your oyster:

Cheers - looks like a separate part, and therefore affordable without remortgaging.

Just been looking at some BMW forums, and providing the tank has not split, it may be rebondable. At 200k miles, I think I'll treat it to a new one anyway - call it a Christmas present

They just yank off. Mines on its way out; however I'm convinced its a safety valve against the H/G failure of my LPG E39... it might just be knackered or it might be H/G. I'm rather disgusted you have got another 25k out of yours regardless :D

If its anything like my 328i, then the seal at the bottom of the tank can be replaced, however id replace the tank aswell as they tend to get brittle and bulge after a while
