Renault 25 V6 Turbo

These things are without doubt some of the most difficult cars to work on I've ever come across.

Difficult in the GTa-its near bloody impossible in the confines of a tighter 25 engine bay.

Mine wont run properly. No, amend that- it runs beautifully for around 5 mins. Then it splutters to a halt -and zippo-till the following day. Missed 2 MOTs cos I couldnt get there...

So far I have replaced plugs (£30), leads (£50), rotor arm(£60) distributor cap (dont ask!),ecu (borrowed) ALL the sensors -initially with resistors, then borrowed spares, complete oil flush, complete water flush-still it wont work.

None of these jobs are easy-some are near impossible (crank sensor springs to mind -needing the car's nose about 4 ft in the air-and 3ft long arms needed.

Its just senselessly complicated -throughout. Ie- 7 seperate buttons for seat adjustment. Just Bonkers!

So beware. When it works -its bloody quick -but this car has been driving me crackers for months. I'll beat it into submission - eventually - but I really cant recommend them

This looked really smart - someone still loves old Renaults. (Bloody motorcyclist spoiling my drive by)

25v6turbo will be getting all excited over this, He was making a list of all the surviving V6 Turbo's left IIRC.

Hi,

I do recommend these :) And that one looks good. I even like working on mine. You just have to take your time ... :)

Even adjusting the tappets takes ages. However, mine has been very reliable and good on fuel (9- 10L / 100km)

@Nigel: Have you tried the XR25 to diagnose the problem? There now even is a free PC emulator of it for the true Renault anoraks (Search for xr25pc).

Whats an XR25?

I do have a box of firelighters though. 5 mins running should just get it far enough away.

Easy to work on? You must be a damned funny shape!

Are these anygood? I cant imagine them being all that awesome in the wallowy 25 chassis, its heavy, and its only punching out just over 200bhp isnt it? Are they OMG RWD GR8 for making a hash of it in the wet weather* etc etc

Hi,

I did not say easy. It can be a challenge. That is why one should drop all tools as soon as you have to rush or just starting considering matches :) The xr25 is the fault reader. It could spare you hours of finding the fault by identifying it in seconds.

205 Horsepower at 1,35 tons is not bad (0-60 in 7.5 seconds, top speed about 150mph). The chassis is firmer and not really wallowy if it is mantained properly (which of course it usually is not). Mine is 20mm lowered at the front with Koni shocks. Try one.

NOONE has ever mentioned a fault reader -where does it plug in? I've not seen any type of diagnostic socket-always assumed it was too early/crude forthat.

I'll get onto one now-ebay perhaps?

Thanks for the 'heads up' - much appreciated.

I'd like to create a Renault 25 replica using an original Countach as the base. I'd convert it to FWD too.

Hi Nigel,

Renault never has easy solutions. Of course, their fault reader is something special that was only sold to their workshops. That means that you won't get them on ebay for under 300 quid... :( That is what it looks like:

The true Renault aficcionado may install the XR25PC on his laptop and solder up the adaptor as described here: http://fr.calameo.com/books/0000223209a77db49a737

But I am sure that someone one here has one. The Diagnostic socket is close to the left hand bonnet hinge,(it can only just be seen, under the purple cable on my picture). You could also describe your problems on renault-alpine.co.uk and renault25.com - they have an English language sub-forum. I reckon it is worth it...

p.s. the xr25pc is not really hard to install. However, those instructions can be very confusing.

I'm getting scared just looking at the photo of the engine bay

OK-so its not readily available -at any sort of sensible price. Typically Renault, really.

I'll not be spending another £300 on it- simply to diagnose. if I cant sort it- it gets broken.

Daniel-thanks-but I suspect you work on these for a living, or this is your only old car. I just cant spare that many hours/£'s on one -when I've a fleet (of other Renners) that are nowhere near as nonsensically complicated - yet still put sensible power down.

21T perhaps?

Cheers though
