DVLA SORN Rules

Went to declare SORN online for my Alfa Six using the V5C and was told that, due to recent changes to the vehicle record, it's not possible to declare SORN unless I take the V5C to a local DVLA office.

I've owned the car since April '08 but never declared SORN and the DVLA record shows the last SORN expired in 2002. Does anyone know if it's possible to tax an unlicensed car or does it have to have a license/SORN about to expire? The car is due to be MOT'd for the first time in ten years soon so will be taxed.

Am I likely to face any penalties for falure to declare SORN and if so, how much...? Plus, what changes could there have been to the vehicle record bearing in mind I've owned it for 2.5 years and no one else has applied for a V5C?

Cheers.

if your going to tax it, then ignore dvla and tax it. if you really want to sorn it, ( a pointless exercise IMO) sorn it online, or send a recorded delivery letter to dvla

If the V5 is in your name you will get a £60 fine for not declaring SORN.If you are about to tax it fill in the green slip, dated a day or so earlier.and use that at the post office. If you use the full V5 it will show up as unlicensed and you will get the fine.If you say you've just bought it (new keeper green slip) you won't.
