Mazda cross-pollinated the (approximate) Mk2 323 front end onto the Mk1 estate, to try and disguise the fact that they hadn't actually brought out a new model. This couldn't disguise the fact that the 'new' estate was RWD and the rest of the Mk2 range FWD though.
