*AS SEEN AT AN UNPRONOUNCABLE CASTLE CLASSIC CAR SHOW*

My lad's car this one. He's supposed to be learning to drive in it and what not, but apparantly it's not street enough for a cool kid like him. So there's a surprise.

1.4 LSi, almost certain it's the single point injection so if you ever binned it the motor will fetch reasonable money to a racer I kid you not. I think you can use these lumps for junior stocks and some banger racing.

First reg'd 02.01.1992 so it's a pretty early one (they were introduced in 1991) and has a pretty crap spec such as keep fit windows AND keep fit steering.

Has a sunroof though (deal clincher of the century?) and the original stereo.

Pretty decent nick and looks completely standard, save perhaps just the nasty mingebag wheeltrims.

Drives ok, no knocks/smoke/oil or water leaks etc.

Bodywork not bad, few scrapes and I 'fixed' one of the wheel arches with filler and a half decent job.

Known faults:

Pulls to the left when you take your hand off the wheel. Can't see any damage so possibly tracking or maybe swapping front wheels for rear will sort it, but no guarantees.

Out of MOT, would be amazed if it wanted much at all. Looks solid where it needs to be except usual Astra wheel arch grot.

Parcel shelf falls down sometimes.

Previous owner must have had his own mobile dust factory but we valeted it and it's not bad at all inside.

Pensioner-tastic scrapes here and there.

*Edit: bit of grot by filler cap (see pictures) and I think we've sinced jetwashed off the engine and the inevitable rocker cover gasket FAIL so the bits we missed make the wonderful allure of old burnt engine oil waft round the cabin. But I'm not charging extra for that.

Radio display panel doesn't work.

Strangely alluring car in a shite way, the kind of thing that will undoubtably soldier on forever and ever with the very basic of maintenance applied once in a blue moon. These motors take incredible abuse/neglect. Duller than a weekend stuck in a lift listening to John Lennon records, but cheap, reliable, efficient transport.

Had planned to get it into a garage (my lad works at one but seemingly it's too much trouble to sort out a quick whang on the ramps) but honestly never bothered. Starts and drives well enough and has GR8 tyres.

As you can see photography is another of my many skills (not) so will try and get some better pictures and post them up.

Taxed until the end of August so you might be able to drive it away legally by booking it in for an MOT or whatever, up to you to find out if this is legal though.

Hard to price because to 99.9% of people it's just a badly spec'd old car which doesn't have the reputation of a Ferrari, but to me it's a half tidy example of an early car. No frills but dead reliable and will last for yonks.

Therefore I'm going to suggest £195 or offers, collection only from Chester.

The money will be badly used as he wants a fucking Saxo, though obv. I'll be trying to get him a Corsa instead, because every dad has to be something of a twat now and then to keep his kids in line.

He has no style!

Seriously though, that's cheap enough for what it is. Looks like it would go through another m.o.t easy.

Has that had a replacement tailgate in the past? I think that's a later model one going by the black number plate surround.

Posted

I did wonder that but some Astra fanatic I talked to once reckons it's original.

It's not, that's the 1995-facelift decor panel. It probably sticks onto the original tailgate just fine though, can't imagine they'd have changed the pressings so it might just be NoNails'ed on. Bloody nice, no frills motor though!

Thanks, might wield my crowbar out in anger at that then!

The boot will have metal pin 'nubs' welded onto the boot that the boot panel mounts onto. Think this was actually an option on some early cars as 91 GSi's and Si's had them. It'll be loose on the left hand side as the lock keeps it in place on the right. Quite sad I know that. :D

It's looks very much like an SPi setup - basically cost cutting conversion of carbs with an injector on the top. :)

Is that a blue interior?

Posted

Yeah, sort of grey-ish blue interior which isn't too bad on the eye. Dash isn't too nice in blue though.

Duller than a weekend stuck in a lift listening to John Lennon records...

I feel a song coming on...

To the tune of John Lennon's 'Imagine'...

Imagine there's no chavs,

It's easy if you try,

Imagine there's no young mums,

Pushing along their kid called Kai

Imagine all the Astras,

From a Merit to a GSiiiiii-iiiiiii-iiiiii

You may say that they are good cars,

Glad I'm not the only one,

You can take your Ford Focus,

And you can shove it up your bum.

No doubt John would approve - he would most probably drive an Astra too. A 1.7 Dizzler Merit 'to save the 'nvironment, like'....

LOLOCOPTERZ! Especially the last line.

There may be an update on this later, some very dodgy looking character was pestering me about it yesterday evening. He looked the type who's only cutlery was brown/blue spoons and the odd scorched cutting implement.
