Violent Naples - Dodgy Italian Driving!

Recommended Posts

Here's a Youtube clip, it's so good it can have its own thread. If you've ever wondered what an in-car view of some traffic in Naples circa the late 70s looks like, this is the one for you. Superb music too, I've got it on tape and drive around in the 626 "urgently".

Some truly lousy driving on display, people cutting in, pulling out, going on the wrong side of the road, parking in ridiculous places, reversing in front of an oncoming bus, it's excellent! Stay tuned after the talking bit for some bonus BMW hooligan smoky exhaust action too.

Here's some pics for those of you who are allergic to videos.

Anything made by Richard Conte or Umberto Lenzi will have Maurizio Merli badly dubbed driving the shit out of an Alfa or Fiat. At some point the continuity will change from blazing hot sun to pissing rain and back again, and several BMW 2000s will smash head on into small rear engined Fiats. A Citroen DS will probably appear full of henchman and \ or turn turtle on the autostrada at some point.

Actually, I might just have got Violent Romeand Tony Arzenta mixed up there. Both are well worth watching. The latter goes for mad money on VHS if you have a copy. I managed to get it on a torrent by leaving my computer on for about a week. It's now safely ensconced in my media centre, alongside shonky retapes of 'Daria' from The N and various piss poor anime series involving large breasts and vampires.

IMHO, the prequel Violent Rome is better than this.

Mr Merli must have three feet or something, as he manages to kick the window out of his Giuli Super and still accelerate. Take close note of the aformentioned sun \ rain juxtaposition - the second unit was clearly taking the piss between takes. Or the editor was a lazy bastard, same difference. Be certain also to take in the skew of the Cinturatos as their sidewalls list into the blacktop.

I bloody love Poliziottesco films.

I love that road in your second vid capture Hirst. From that angle it looks like a real version of that Scalextric that went vertically up the wall for a bit.

Wonder what it's like to look down it?
