Banger auctions. Do you still attend?

Bought that 318is from the legendary Tuebrook in January, but other than that, and the odd trip to Carr Mill I don't do much auction chod nowadays.

Carr Mill in St. Helens I presume? What a toilet  !!!

There wasn't a car in there that was worth anything above scrap as most of the cars were nearing the end of usefulness and people I know who have bought from there have always had major problems with their purchases. The only exception was a bloke who got a T&T'd A-reg Nova hatch with two very rotten doors (rest of the car was clean) for 100 notes, he even drove home in it :) .

As a teenager I used to go to Leominster Car Auctions on the Hereford/Shropshire border, a superb banger auction with all sorts of junk.

I remember bidding on all sorts, £50 Mk3 Cortinas and RWD Escorts when they were just worn out junk, not iconic classics as they are now. I got a C reg Visa GTi for £350, (it would be been about 7 years old), unfortunately the insurers wouldn't cover it so it went back in the next week.

Often the best vehicles would be the 3 year old police Cavaliers with 100k on the clock, so you can guess what the rest was like. The one I do regret not getting was a mint looking Renault 16, out of storage with no MOT, which went for something like £70.

The local scrapyard gave up the contract to pick up the unsold leftovers, they were so crappy!

Only one I go to now is a very rural one in West Wales held every month, it grew out of a monthly farm machinery sale, the last car I actually bought was a V reg Mondeo for £320 two years ago when I needed an old smoker.

That sounds not unlike Witney Car Auctions, AKA WOMA (West Oxfordshire Motor Auctions) which is still going. The first car I bought there in 1987 was a 1977 Cortina 1.6L with a tappy cam, flat paint and shagged clutch for £80 which was cheap then for a Mark 4. They used to sell pensioned off Cop cars and between 1987-1991 I bought plenty of Escort 111's, Metroids, Chavaliers. wanked BMW's and Jags etc. These were the days when you could pop down the auctions, spend a grand on an Escrote, clean it up, MOT and cambelt and out the bastard the next week for £1700. I don't recall there being anywhere near as many mouth breathing wankers back then either.

The car I recall vividly was an utterly disgusting, lopsided, filthy 4 year old Ambastardor 1.7HL in HAB on the A plate. I paid £320 for it, nursed it home, gave it the mother and father of valets, pumped up the Hy Drag Ass and put the fucker back through. I think it made £650 but it wasn't a bad bit of coin for a day's toil.
