A question to all you fonts of automotive knowledge; a friend who has recently purchased an E39 5 Series wants to know whether they have cam belts or timing chains? If the former, does anyone know when they should be changed?

What engine does it have Reg?.

 

A quick google search reveals that they seem to be chain driven.

it's a 2.5 so I assume that equates to a 525

E39, does that make it a 24v with Vanos? If so, the vanos units can get alittle rattley with age, but from what I can make out the rest of the drivetrain is fairly bulletproof.

 

Last of the handsome BMW's aswell 8)
