Bunglebus buys a lemon again. Rattle rattle

Lupo continues to do car stuff, but I've always known it needs a thermostat as it doesn't get up to 90, especially on motorway runs. Around town it seemed to get up to temp and stay there.

Anyway, now it's warm weather and doesn't matter so much, I got around to changing it

While I was messing about with that I gave the exhaust a tweak to stop it knocking against the heat shield and annoying me.

Success on both counts

The N/S handbrake cable on this one snapped last weekend, while in normal use, and definitely not while I was trying to do a cheeky handbrake turn on the grass at the boot sale.

Replacement isn't too terrible, it feeds into a guide tube just above the exhaust, so one corner of the heat shield has to come down, a couple of fiddly retaining clips on the axle and body, and then the really fun part of attaching it back onto the brake shoe. I'm sure there's a proper tool to compress the spring on the outside of the tube, but I don't have one. You can take the shoes off and attach the cable easily enough, but then you can't get them back on past the hub. A good 45 mins of inventing new swearwords eventually got it done, after re- releasing the retaining clips to give myself a bit of extra room. Then just the fun* job of getting those bastard springs back into the shoes, only one fired off into the distance and was quickly found again, so I'll take that as a win

Here's the tool I need

The other week the Mrs said this one was making a funny noise. I had a listen and agreed, and it wasn't the "see if it gets worse" kind, it was the "shit, turn it off!" kind.

Rather than scrabble about in the rain, my friend kindly kicked his lovely E30 cab outside and dollied the Lupo over to his house, and made a start before I got there. Firing it up with the cambelt cover removed revealed a very wobbly water pump, how this wasn't leaking I don't know

I had the cambelt kit already, new pump obtained from GSF.  Garage floor wetter than if we were outside. Onwards!

Oh and the MoT runs out tomorrow, and the open air one she's using instead runs out on the 14th...

I saw a yellow Lupo going along Gloucester Avenue on a dolly would that have been it?

I had one of those crap Eurocarparts water pumps fail in the same way. I could hear a knocking coming from behind the timing belt cover. Like yours wasn’t leaking, no idea how it didn’t launch the belt. Pump must have been only about 2/3 years old as I was the one that originally fitted it.
