Volvo 340 (1.4) engine needed

My Estafette van engine is lunched.Rather than rebuild an ailing 1100, I'd kinda like to 'upgrade' to a sporty 1400.Am advised that said Volvo 340 is a bolt in swop - which appeals greatly.Anyone know of a festering heap sitting someplace, with nice mechanicals? Thanks

No sadly too many differences. Want a ''quick swop''-& 250 cc ish upgrade!) could use it on the road right now.

I know of one in West Wales, probably not much use to you - but if you can't find one nearer, PM me.

Hi Nigel, I woz led to believe Renault 12 blocks were the same, as every time i went to a scrappy for bits, i got the comment " the guys with ovlov 340's use them, so they are in demand...."you must be awash with R 12 engines down there ! ?I have some here too, want me to sling one in my suitcase for yer ?

here's a rare rear-engined one for you, I can whip the motor out of this one quite easily.....

Sorry-although similar the 12 wont fit.The Estafette is all back to front so the waterpump & several other ancillaries are at the ''otherend''.Reliably informed its a Renault 18 1400cc engine(shame-just scrapped one thathad piston failure), a Fuego 1400cc engine ,or the Volvo.Which do you think I'm going to find easiest? got severalspare 12 engines-more's the pity.(Oh-do tell Brian his old 12 Estate goes for its MOT on Monday 19th, eh!)

Brian has been following the saga of his old 12 Break with avid interest !I have got him hooked on Autopoo, so he will see your reply. As to PRU, well, I can tell you a few stories about that one !!Drove it to Penzance and back a few years ago, and also took Brian to see the original owner in Winton, Bournemouth (although that's NOT who he bought it off !!) that guy did a runner to Spain after just using it to clear out his house before selling up, and never put it in his name, just used it with no tax/mot or anything, knowing he couldn't be traced !!! Someday soon I am going to post pics of the other fourteen (14) Estates I have previously owned, never let down in one, most cost around £150 mark -what does that tell you .....Good luck sorting the Estafette, will be in La Belle France next month, might drop by en route to my Pandorabed !

All versions of the Sierra engine, as Renault called it long before Dutton used the name on their Escort-based kit, are, essentially, the same, but I've just been out for a look at the one in my 340 and can confirm that it's the "right way round" as are those in 12s. (great estates those, and an excuse to post a piccie of my last one):

To get the water pump at the other end, and the other differences, then the FWD Renaults that'll yield a suitable engine are those with their engine behind the gearbox, so that'll be the 4, 5, 6 and 7(5 saloon).

1400s in that style are probably (and watch someone correct this) only found in 5 GTLs of the late '70s to early '80s.

Or.... (long time since I worked on Régie stuff regularly so this may not be possible...) Could the bits used to change the position of ancillaries like the pump not be transferred from your old engine in the van to a 340 engine? I've asked an ex-Renault UK workshop employee mate from years back who's sure to know as he was constantly experimenting with transplant surgery (his 12 Estate ran a 340 engine at around the same time as I had that green one with 17 Gordini engine, strut front suspension (Fuégo), 5 speed gearbox (Trafic) and 12 Gordini brakes.)

Hey Nige, back on the VOC forum, and I'll post a wanted ad up for you. What region are you in? Is it Sussex? (I think that's where Arundel is). How much are you wanting to pay? With 340s it might be easier to buy the whole car and sell the rest on to the OMG YO drift squad. There's a cheap 1.4 on there but it's in Leeds. Close for me, NT SO GR8 for yourself.

Thanks Wat-appreciated.I'm 1/2 mile from the southcoast -midway between Brighton & Portsmouth.Happy to buy a complete car-that way I 'll know its condition first.Been advised- by a knowledgeable one on here- that mounts etcetc dictate that block. I dont want to swop stuff out, mount & dismount 4-5 times each time something doesnt work. The hole it fits in is a right pain-I'm looking for a quick, simple, option.Additionally the parts saved from this one will help on the ailing engine in the Estafette pickup.Cheers though
