Paint/Spraying/Two pack

Anyone used two-pack?

I've done a little cellulose in the past, but having stripped a door for The Six down to bare metal :-

I presume I'd need a air-fed mask and another compressor, if mine isn't man enough to feed the spray gun and the mask?

I have the following paint :-

Is it metallic? I did flat red which came in two pack and needed no lacquer, however I'm doing metallic at the moment and it needs the base coat and then 'clear coat' on the top. Base is cellulose, and the clear coat is two pack.

Not sure what to do now.

Is it metallic?

I don't think so; just a plain red, I think.

I'd better dust off my compressor! :-

I didn't think you could mix cellulose and two-pack?

I doubt the basecoat is celly, it's usually a 1k acrylic or something. You just bang on the base coat, let it flash of and slap the clearcoat on. 2K is piss easy to paint with really. Very forgiving. You can paint it with a non-airfed mask so long as you have the correct type and you've decent ventillation. In an unventilated workshop the overspray will glog a mask very quick. Using an HVLP gun helps a lot but I think you need about 10CFM for one.

Dunno what the paint shop bloke told me. I was expecting to have the paint and then to have to buy the hardener as well, but he said I didn't need it. I can't really be sure if he was talking shit or not. He said get lacquer as the paint will be dull when I spray it on.

Sorry Keef for the slight stealing of the Thread.

No problem. :)I'm open to offers on the paint I have here, if you are interested? I'd be far happier with cellulose.

I'm after a "nice" colour Blue. I have seen a nice Ford Blue that i may do.Does the paint need to be messed about with ... like with thinners and so on ?Because i am PAP / Poo when it comes to getting the right mixture.

2pack is dangerous stuff, very dangerous stuff, you can easily do yourself some permanent damage, trouble is, because everything from salad cream to dome wax is plastered in warning labels, we tend to ignore them, but in this case you have to think beyond breathing gear. I've known a few sprayers who have claimed the stuff's safer, and they've also been mentally unstable, in a ticking time bomb getting sectioned kind of way, seriously, be careful, the stuffs evil.

2k is bad, however bear in mind that the health issues and associated guidelines are for those who have prolonged exposure.. i.e. paint sprayer and those that work in the paint manufacturing and refinishing trade. Take every precaution you can and painting one car isn't going to to be curtains for you. However, if you already have health issues such as asthma then I'd give it a miss as it's much, much more of a risk in those circumstances.

As this thread has kind of turned into a Paint info centre i want to ask afew questions (please)Which paint is normally cheaper and easier to use ?cellulose or 2 Pak ?Also which is more "flexible" ? ... as i want to spray GRP / FibreglassI think i will use Etch primer or nice high build primer (If this is wrong .. tell me)Thank you Kindly !

I've only used a celly a couple of times and I don't like it. I does provide a nice deep shine... better than 2k, if you lay it on well but it's harder to get a good result right off. 2k can look a little like plastic when it's a solid colour, although you can clearcoat it which sorts it. My main dislike of it is it's not as durable as 2k. Once 2k has gone off, little short of paint stripper will touch it but get brake fluid or thinners on celly and it'll dissolve. You only really need etch on bare steel. you'd be better of with a 2k high build. Even if i was using celly top coat, I'd still prime with 2k.

Cellulose is a lot more work, compared to 2pack it's heartbreaking, and you'll need to polish it regularly, especially red because it turns Barbie pink, you'll attract possibly unwanted attention. Then to put the cream on the cookie, you'll likely have to repeat it all over again in just a few years. Use two pack and it shouldn't need doing again for a long time. Which is just as well as you may not be around to.
