Maybe someone can do the lowrider look in Orange.ย

I like the budget hubcaps, personally, as you already know.ย
ย

If you really want to stay on the budget track, then you could always just buy some cheap wheel trims in a style you like and rattle-can them goldโ€ฆ

Thats a great idea Glen.ย
ย

I wonder if one would find some that will fit, adhere and stay on there.ย
ย

And then a nice flattering design.ย

Most wheel trims fit by clipping into the outer rim. Lots and lots of options out there for not much ยฃs, either from Amazon/Ebay, or even Halfords. Would be a way of trialling the look/colour without spending much at all.ย

Got asked about this by a guy in South Africa.ย

ย

ย

ChatGPT responded.ย

ย

ย

ย

This is a vintage MotoMeter radiator cap temperature gauge, commonly used in the 1910sโ€“1920s on brass-era automobiles.

ย

What it is

ย

Itโ€™s not just a cap โ€” itโ€™s a radiator-mounted thermometer.

ย

The glass window shows a temperature scale inside, which would protrude into the coolant. Drivers could monitor engine temperature before dashboard gauges became standard.

ย

The distinctive features

  • Cast metal Art Decoโ€“style housing with stepped fins
  • Round glass viewing lens
  • Thermometer stem that extends into the radiator
  • Large base designed to mount directly on the radiator neck

What vehicle?

ย

These were aftermarket accessories, but very commonly seen on:

They were often branded MotoMeter (Boyce MotoMeter Co., Chicago).

ย

Likely Date

ย

Based on the styling (more streamlined, less ornate than very early brass versions):

ย

Most likely: earlyโ€“mid 1920s

ย

If it came off a Ford, statistically it was probably:

  • Model T (circa 1915โ€“1925)

Value (if youโ€™re curious)

ย

Depending on condition and brand marking:

  • $75โ€“$250+
  • More if rare or tied to a specific marque

Butโ€ฆโ€ฆ.. ยฃ20.00 collected, in my pocket (postage and packaging and a drive to post office would make it more) means a buyer also gets to feel they have a win.ย

Collection of bundle I bought 90 miles away at 45mpg is ยฃ15.00ย

I have Found a set of 5 series 1 Land Rover Freelander 17โ€ alloy wheels in 3 spoke design which I have liked since before I bought the Oldsmobile.ย

Of course they are 205 miles from my home (they will be once collected in Shrewsbury by @CraigRK and taken to his home) and will need to find their way South to me or at least closer before I can proceed with them.ย

Price is right though at ยฃ75.00 or $102.00 or R1650.00 in South Africa ย ย

Stripping old tyres, cleaning, painting wheels and new tyres will increase that quite a lot but still be worth doing.ย

ย

Tyres are completely bald and need replacing.ย

Bolt pattern is 5x115 on the Oldsmobile but these are 5x114.3 so 0.7mm spread over 5 studs with special lug nuts will fix that.ย

Bigger problem is the Centre Bore.ย

Oldsmobile is 70.3mmย

Land Rover Freelander Mk1 (1998โ€“2006) uses alloy wheels with a centre bore ofย
64.1 mm. These wheels are hub-centric and feature a 5x114.3 mm PCD (bolt pattern).ย
Key Wheel Specifications for Freelander 1:
  • Centre Bore:ย 64.1 mm
  • PCD (Bolt Pattern):ย 5x114.3 mm
  • Offset (ET):ย Typically 35mm to 46mm
  • Wheel Size:ย Commonly 15" to 18" diameters.ย
When replacing wheels, it is essential to use this specific 64.1 mm center bore size to ensure the wheel is properly centered on the hub.ย

ย

This will necessitate the machining of 3.1mm from the new alloys.ย

ย

I have been given a price of ยฃ120.00 to machine 4 wheels by a wheel repair shop.ย

ย

Being 17โ€ wheels, there should be a decent selection of part worn tyres available free or to buy if I keep my eyes open. ย

ย

I am hoping they also fill the arches better.ย

ย

Now just need to find them a ride from Shropshire to Kent.ย

PONY EXPRESS NEEDED.ย

SHROPSHIRE TO KENT.ย

Request Requested Requiredโ€ฆ..??

ย

It is always worth asking about a possible Pony Express opportunity.ย
ย

Just in case.ย
ย

Craig has collected 5x 17โ€ wheels and tyres for me In Shrewsbury, He has them at his place in Sandford Prees near Shrewsbury.ย
ย

I am sure we will figure a way to get them South at some point, but of course sooner would be great.ย
ย

Butโ€ฆ.. please keep in mind, they take up quite a lot of space.ย

We have not figured out where to have the tyres pulled off yet, so if we (Craig) can get that done, they will obviously take up a bit less space.ย
ย

If you can help, please let me know.ย
ย

Thanks.ย

As an alternative to finding a Pony Express ride for the wheels or wheels with tyres from Shrewsbury area to Rochester I was wondering how many or how often any of you have couriered wheels this way?

ย

I have 5x 17โ€ wheels to move.ย
ย

How do you package and ship them ?ย

Thanks.ย

Posted

Itโ€™s almost always significantly cheaper to pay to have the tyres removed before couriering them than it is to pay the courier to ship them with them on.ย
ย

Probably the cheapest way is to strip the tyres off and send them as five individual parcels.ย
ย

Alternatively, stick them all on a pallet and use somewhere like shiply to get a quote.ย

Weather has sucked for the last few weeks.ย

Yesterday I got the Oldsmobile up on the ramp and made a short ( well, almost) video of the underside and condition of the sills.ย
ย

ย

While I was under there I did discover that the rear silencer, which is a massive 24x10x5 inch box, is at the end of itโ€™s useful life.ย
Also, there is only a catalyst up front, the rest is just 2.5 inch straight pipe.ย
ย

I would be surprised if this is not the original pipe. No joins etc.ย

So last night I ordered a ยฃ40.00 rear silencer in stainless steel to fit, which I will use clamps for.ย
It is an 18 inch unit with 8x5 dimensions, so smaller than the original.ย
It claims to be straight through, so hopefully it will make the V6 sound a bit more pronounced.ย
ย

I also went out at 8.00pm to collect a couple of 200 litre drums for my friend Sarah (purple lawnmower) to create two upright strawberry growing tubs.ย
I will process them soon with a load of cuts and then using heat and wine bottles to create the pockets for the plants. ย
ย

When I got home the rain was still coming down and the car showed 2โ€™C with a breeze. Lucky I wasnโ€™t working out in that mess.ย
ย

At 9.00 pm Pedro got in from work (he goes every night for an hour to serve all the machines on site) and brought gifts.ย
When contractors visit site, they often leave behind unused, partially used materials when jobs are completed. Pedro is a magpieโ€ฆโ€ฆย

Also spoke with Craig ย

He had been out in the dark, down farm lanes to collect the Freelander alloys and tyres for me ย

The underside looks really clean for it's age, quick wire brush and spray coat of lanoguard or undersealย ย ๐Ÿ‘ย you can paint the suspension arms etc when you take it apart to lower it ...

The anti roll bar bushes look a bit 'used' (but quite good for the mileage!) but you can measure and replace quite easily ...

Think you are right to be pleasedย ๐Ÿ‘
