^there lies the problem.a remap only changes map only changes characteristics within the set parameters, the ecu needs the pre and post cat sensors to work .yes you could go aftermarket, but that would be a world of pain if it involved anything remotely modern.rolling roads have found that modern engines loose power without a cat, small gains are found using a sports cat.

I get Banzai and Jap Performance on a fairly regular basis and they're as keen as ever on de-cats and aftermarket ECUs ? Even more so on the ECUs, if anything. IIRC the HKS De-Cat Exhaust for the R35 GTR claims something crazy like a 40bhp improvement.Either way, that thing has SIX! cats from the factory.

I have no experience of these catalytic converters of which you speak.....

mega money,6k for the exhaust, couple of kk's for the mods to make it work, the time for mapping and on the rollers to get the best of it say at least 1k and requires an o2 simulator and is advertised as not road legal.for 40bhp?,no thanks.

£6k? For a decat pipe and a bit of tweakery? Even if it was a full, custom made, stainless pipe and a day on the rollers that's still about £5k too much.Someone's being monumentally shafted there.

10 years old equates to a banger? Huh?

My decat pipe was only £35 and that was a pukka VAG Motorsport item in VAG packaging. £6k including a bit of code-gobbling with the ECU is madness.

10 years old is like a nearly new car to me.

It's way too new for me now a days..........designed after '92 ...no thank you

I put a decat pipe on my Xantia TD and disabled the EGR,made one helluva difference, did the same to my old Disco TDI,same results. Cats on a diesel, well old ones like mine, are a waste of time, just hold the car back.

I've done enough EEPROM and computer programming in my time to know recent ECU's are basic, even by calculator standards. :D OK, so not 'basic', but not 6k for a pipe and someone to piggyback a chip.

It's really just a lookup table.... if revs are xxxrpm and temp is this and this is that, then the fuelling is yyyyyy. It's pretty simple, the separating factor is the amount of cash needed to buy all the programming equipment. That's why they'll charge you £300-£600 just for a remap, to make back the £5k they've needed to shell out for the equipment.

wouldn't agree that modern ecu's are basic, also a modern car has amny other components that have more than 1 ecu,and they all need to talk to each other at the right time in the right way for anything to work properly.
