Just came across this website http://www.old-ambulance.com/ all about old South Australian ambulances.

 

They seem to of had some pretty interesting vans I like the 6 wheel Holden

but the early Holden's where a fine bit of kit.

And this 1937 Industrial Custom 6 had a 212 CI Straight 6 engine and was capable of 80 mph, pretty quick for back then.

But i think the Transits are the best, they run a 4.1 crossflow 6 cyl engine with a autobox, Bet they sounded nice but they never had power steering so they couldn't of been much fun.

How did they fit a straight 6 under the bonnet? I didn't think there would be enough room.

I expect it extended into the cab, whoever modded my old CF did the same when they put the 6 pot Holden motor in it.

That could be right, looking at this photo there is a large box in the footwell that I don't think is in a normal Transit.
