Civic Saloon - never seen one till today

I knew about the Ballade and the Concerto, but had never seen a Civic saloon in that shape before.

I had one of those about 10 years ago. Really lovely cars and built on a completely different platform to the Concerto/Rover 200 I believe. There's loads of room inside. They were only available in GL spec and only sold here for about a year or so. Getting quite scarce now but I would definitely have a minter if I could find one.

The only problem was that the autobox in mine turned out to be shagged and it cost me a fortune. I cut my losses in the end because it was never right and the car had a few other issues (heart ruling head purchase  ).

A good looked-after one would be a lovely thing though, everything is electric and they ride and handle nice. 1400 twin carb set up with usual Honda manual choke. Would get a manual 'box though....

Are they based on the Civic hatch then? I had custody of one for a while, a 1.4 GL with twin carbs and it was brilliant to drive, like an outsized go-kart, apart from the usual '80s Honda overly light steering.

Pretty sure these ones are the same underneath as the 3-door hatch of the time.

I've always rather liked the next generation to this one:

Incredibly long wheelbase for the size of car, for some reason. The garage I use have a megamile (180k or so) M-plater, 1.5 automatic, and it's a lovely little thing. It's a bit crusty around the rear arches, as every unloved early/mid 90's Honda tends to be, but everything just works and it's completely rattle-free. Marvellous courtesy car.

I can honestly say I've never seen an example of it's replacement on the road, ever - plenty of coupes this shape, but never a saloon.

After this Honda decided that we were only worthy of a Civic saloon with a hybrid drivetrain, for some reason.
