Fuel injector service

Much of the hose on my SD1 has never been replaced - it has done well to last 35 years. The hoses that are fitted to the injectors are original - not surprising as replacement is not a five minute job.

Mindful that the injectors had never been touched I thought it prudent to give them a service. A kit comprising new hoses, ferrules, pintle caps, filter baskets and seals were obtained for around £60. Not cheap - but something you will probably only do once.

I removed injectors and rail in one - it came out fairly easily. A blast with an airline before you start (or a vacuum) saves shit entering the inlet manifold - there will be a ton of it as well.

I dismantled the rail and removed the injectors from their housings - corrosion had done a good job of holding everything together.

Once they were out I put them on some card - they needed to have the hose and ferrules removed.

Cutting down the hose and into the ferrule with a junior hacksaw is how you remove them - a pair of thin nosed pliers is then used to pull them off. The original hose was still hard to get off - austin rover used good quality hose.

Next - removal of the filter baskets. A wood screw wound in just slightly is enough - a pull (and a wiggle) and the basket is out - I used vise grips to pull the screw out.

The pintle caps were placed in the hole and tapped in with a rubber mallet - I bought a spreader clamp to push them in but it was too much of a struggle. Apologies - it should say filter baskets.

Pintle caps - I cut down them on either side with a hobby knife then pulled them off with pliers. The spreader clamp I mentioned earlier was used to refit the new ones - you will hear a " click" when they are fully home.

To fit the hoses was simple - put the ferrule on the metal inlet. Take the new hose and lube the bottom 2mm - I used silicone spray. The hose is pushed onto the inlet - you then push the hose and injector against something solid. The hose will now be fully home - the inlet has a double arrowhead - the ferrule grips the pipe and the arrowhead prevents the pipe and ferrule moving up the inlet.

I then fitted the rubber o rings around the outside - these sit inside the fixings that hold the injector - a plate then screws down and clamps the pair of injectors in place.

So a fair bit of work - however I want the car to have no issues with emissions or for it to go up in flames - so it really needed to be done. I have cleaned the plenum/ rocker covers/ all the breathers.

Tomorrow I need to start putting it all back together - and see if it runs.

I recognise that kit! 

I've got pretty much the exact same one waiting patiently for me to fit to the Jag.  She needs the cam cover oil seals changing, so everything needs to come apart to do that anyway...so ideal opportunity.

These are past their best.

At least the injection hardware is easy to get at...about the only thing that is!

Thanks for that walkthrough.  Really good to hear from actual experience on what to expect.  I've never taken things like this apart before so that's useful reading.
