Shy gears

In the past couple of months the R9 had started to jump out of 1st gear, not all the time, just sometimes. Fair enough, a bit annoying, especially when I'm trying to make a quick getaway from junctions & the car doesn't move, but I could live with it. So I did. Then one morning it jumped out of 3rd as I was making progress along the B road, slightly more than an annoyance, I'd actually consider it dangerous as there was a car behind me who could have run into me as I started slowing without any traction carrying me forwards. I realised what had happened, almost disbelievingly & shoved it back in gear again.Apart from that, it had just become an occasional irritation, no more than once a journey it might jump out of 1st. Last night however, it jumped out 3 times on the way home, almost at successive junctions, so for me it's escalating from annoyance to "problem". I swear it's only a matter of time before I get shunted at a junction because the car behind thinks I'm making a move, as will I, but then don't!Any ideas what's causing this? It only seems to be the odd gears, i.e. 1st & 3rd that are dodgy, it hasn't yet jumped out of 2nd or 4th & it wouldn't jump out of 5th because you have to reach for it & once it's in it stays there.PS: it isn't happening every journey, last night it did it 3 times, this morning it didn't happen once, & it was the same journey! :?

Gearbox mount? The boss's Felicia does this and that is due to a knackered g/box mount, however the clutch is knackered as she likes to use it as a foot rest and the gear lever flops about due to dodgy linkages. When I drive it I just keep my hand on the lever for a bit after the gear change. Not too sure about your specific car but one way to check for dodgy mounts, is to put the car in 1st leave the handbrake on and bring the clutch up till it is pulling against the h/brake, if the mounts are u/s then you should feel a fair bit of movement. If not it could be that 1st and 3rd are on the way out replace the box or drive around it by keeping pressure on the lever or use those gears as little as possible.HTH

Could be adjustment, levers running out of movement in the forward plane and 1st and 3rd aren't always being engaged fully, or even wear in the linkages.

Start with engine Mounts and Gear box mounts, try and eliminate the cheapest options first so you dont get stung in the pocket when you find out it was something simple after you've just paid some scroat to strip the gearbox out!

dear regie

when i originally described the car on here http://autoshite.commlm/forum/viewtopic.ph ... highlight= the gearbox fault was mentioned and as it was purchased from me at weighing in money you have done very well so far

( you are presumably still using it as your daily) if you need a gearbox let me know

ps happy birthday

i had this on a tipo before ,it had a bent rod in the linkage,so first and third were like yours,so i would have a look there, and the mounts like others have said.

Hi Paul, yes I remembered something being mentioned about it jumping out of 1st but this problem has literally only reared it's ugly head within the last couple of months so I must have been very lucky! Yes I have done well, it's been dependable, not had a problem since the clutch cable was changed back in June! It's used at least 5 days a week doing 50 miles a day, can't complain...This gear jumping thing, it's not something I can't live with, although I'd prefer not to. Some journeys it doesn't happen at all, other journeys it may happen once, twice, three times whatever, I'm only concerned if it's going to become a constant problem. At the moment I'm keeping my hand on the stick when I pull away, although at one point today that wasn't enough to prevent it from jumping out, so I'm either going to have to apply more pressure or accept that I'm not going to be able to prevent it from jumping out.I'm going to attempt to check the gearbox oil level so we can rule that out but not being mechanically minded I don't know whether a replacement box is necessary or whether there is a cheaper, simpler solution. Thanks

It's of no help whatsoever, but my mum's Renault 5GTL did a similar thing. She cured it by selling it on, and it didn't do it on the test drive...

I'll wager two things here if there's no issues with linkage... 1) it's nothing to do with oil level. It may have been but if so the damaged caused isn't likely to be fixed with a top up.2) it's going to get worse until it does it all the time. I'd just go find yourself a s/h box and get it swapped if it's definately a problem with the box itself.
