GM not selling Vauxhall-Opel

Forget Vauxhall/Opel/GM, what's this I hear that Threshers will be closing loads of their outlets.

Yep,the company which owns them all went into administration last thursday.Wine rack here has been shut since, and not openedI feel sorry for the staff, as it was pretty much pay day and they havent been paid yet.
And the staff only found out because it was in the papers. They're getting ninety days and working for one month.Scant consolation for being treated like shit and having no work in the run up to Christmas.

Can't see why GM would want to ditch Opel. After all, anyone who can make a massive profit selling stunningly mediocre products must be a keeper

Surely just before Christmas is a very stupid time to close a booze company?

True, but remember all the supermarkets have better offers on during this time of year on alcohol, because they have vast profit in all sorts of other areas they can afford to be cheapest in alcohol, whereas a shop specialising in it cannot, as its their primary income.I forget who, but one supermarket has 25% off 6 bottles of wine or something now.Im suprised newsagents havent been affected by supermarkets that much, they do everything they do. And probably cheaper.Take for example the company my mum works for, Martins McColl, they have 1200 stores nationwide and make shitloads of profit. But back to topic.Opel going on strike? Fools, here they are being handed back to the company, who lets face it, has pretty much kept them going for most of the companies life and they strike. Well thats logical guys, Vauxhall thanks you for the upcoming additional manufacturing contracts.

Supermarkets are a dreary place to buy booze. I like to support my local discount off-licence, as does the surrounding estate come to think of it.

Agreed, theres nothing as dull as studying the alcohol in a brightly lit aisle, on a floor sticky where some poor sucker dropped that red wine.Offys dont exist round here, rich people would be in uproar if a 'cheap' store were to ever open.

Tescos DID have a hand in them mate, or at least one major British chain of newsagents!

Personally I only ever extremely rarely buy booze from shops as I can't be arsed drinking at home. It's the pub or nothing for me.

I quite like the look of that Astra but it does seem 'Fiesta-ish' in places Mr Sceptre

Opel workers must be the first Germans who actually want to work for a Russian company!

Germany is desperate to have good relations with Russia as that's were all their natural gas comes from now.

They don't seem to understand that Russians have very long memories, and any chance to shit on their oldest and most despised enemy will always be most welcome.

This is why Putin was annoyed the Magna deal fell through.

It was bankrolled by a Russian bank and since all Russian banks do what he says, owning one of Germany's largest employers would have given him yet another useful bit of leverage over Ms Merkel.

If I was a Opel worker, I'd be looking at houses in Stuttgart & Munich and keeping a close eye on the situations vacant websites of VW, Audi, BM and Merc.

Good point about the Russian connection, I hadn't thought of that. What are they thinking? Like i already said, I don't see the logic of striking when there are redundancies in the off.

Does anyone else think that the new Astra looks very much like a larger 5dr Fiesta?

^ The high spec ones might look like that, but the poverty models I saw on a transporter looked nothing like that 'nice'. Looked more like a Focus / Megane that had been left too close to the fire and had melted a bit.

The FT website is saying the new chief of GM Europe may be Nick Reilly, who is a non nonsense bloke who used to run Vauxhall. He then went over to Asia to sort the mess that was Daewoo post bankruptcy. Bad news for the Boxheads, good news for the UK plants I reckon..

In some cases it was worse than that. Every month each shop receives a box of "Point of Sale" stuff, this is the posters and signs that show promotions and special offers etc. The first that many of the staff knew about it was when they opened the box and found posters saying things like "everything must go". :(

It's wank the way some companies treat their workforce.

'We' only found out our place was for sale because it was in the papers, or a paper to be exact. Negotiations are pretty well under way it would seem so we'll see what happens after that. Reasonably confident we'll be ok but you can never count your chickens.

Back o/t I had a quick walk round the (Vauxhall) plant about ten years back now and the Astras at the time (Mk4) destined for Europe had loads nicer spec than 'our' models.

I also agree about mingebag spec'd models. It's fucking sad I know but every time I see a Mk3 1.4LS three door in white with rusty rear arches it makes me smile.

We had a Corsa B Merit in work last week. Proper poverty motoring but all the better for it. 145 13T tyres lol
