Turbodiesel my Ginetta?

Right I've had enough, and it's got to stop. I had fully black hair before I bought that car and now the left temple is sprouting silver strands.The problme is this - my Pinto is shagged and now dead. I didn't much care for the engine; no torque and rattly. So the ideal conversion might be an Endura DE turbo, 1.8 version.I have a few questions, therefore. The car is a Ginetta G26 with a 2 litre Pinto and a type 9 box. The Sierra turbodiesel used a type 9 (in early versions). So my question is this: Would the conversion be an almost straight swap? Will the diesel bolt up to my gearbox and sit on my mounts?I can't seem to find much information about the different forms of this engine. I know they were used in RWD cars (Sierra and P100) and FWD Escorts, Orions and Mondeos. Are they all the same? Will a Mondeo TD fit a RWD setup or will I need a special sump? If it can be done, great. More power and MPG.

Excusing my shameless sales plug but is that anything like the same engine as a 96ish Escort 1.8 turdblow diesel? If so I'm taking one in this week and its heading for the frag.

Well, should be possible, especially if you find a rotten Sierra as that'll already be RWD FTW. Might be trickier to make a transverse engine fit, but I'm not really aware of the differences.

I think it would work. Anyone with a good memory recall the dieseled Hillman Avenger that came up a couple of years ago?That used an Endura DE and type 9, the bloke who built it / sold it said it was a dead easy job. Would probably go alright in something lightweight. In it's natural environment, acceleration is not great, but once you've got it wound up you can motor along nicely, just need to plan ahead and try not to lose too much momentum!!The later DI version is much better, but contains some clever electronic gubbins which might be a pain in the bum to try and transplant.

No answers, but a few questions...Would the gearbox ratios still work ok? I'll guess that the diesel engine runs out of revs before the pinto so even with the extra torque it might drive a bit odd.And wouldn't the maximum speed be much reduced with a lower rev limit?

Ok, I've done several diesel conversions...the Endura will mate to the Type 9 , however it is a noisey box in the diesel.Is the front crossmember from a Sierra? if not you will have to make your own mounts.Fwd engines can be converted but you need the bits of a RWD engine to do it.Wirings easy.Fuel tank will need a swirl pot added and a return line if you dont already have one.Exhaust easy as well use a Sierra downpipe....and so on.I can help you through most of the problems if you decide to go ahead with it :D

To answer a few questions, the front crossmember is a Ginetta specific part with Cortina type mountings. As there were Pinto versions of the Cortina I can't see this being a massive issue. The gearbox is a normal 5 speed type 9. I don't know if the diesel used the same ratios; but they re far from ideal with the current engine. At the moment it's far too revvy with nothing low down; so the diesel dhould be the reverse and solve the problem.What RWD parts are needed? I'm assuming bits like the sump....Are the block mountings the same? The Sierra diesel lumps are still about. Woul it be easier to get one of those? If anything they seem to be worth less as there is greater demand for FWD versions.

Sierra ones are 75bhp, wheras some of the FWD application ones have an intercooler, thus meaning they have a tarmac-chewing 89bhp. Fierce!

The 2.3 Sierra diesel also used a diff with a lower final drive aswell as a diffrent set of ratios in its box. Not to sure about the 1800 TD version as ive not had much to do with them.

Both diesels had different ratios to the petrol options.
