Missing piece

Attention mechanical experts.

I've been holding this little nobbly thing in place with tie straps on the Audi since i got it.

Without these it loses gears all over the place. If you get the tie straps right you get all 5 gears, but only for so long. They slip out of place eventually and then the gears start to go awol. Got no reverse at the moment.

What is the part I am missing, can anyone identify what it could be??

It's part of the gear selector mechanismErrr, you knew that didn't you  If you go along to the dealer and ask to look at their microfiche at the parts department, they should be able to show you nice exploded diagrams with part numbers next to them. You can never tell with Audi parts like that, it could be pleasant surprise and be a tenner, or it could be three hundred.

Looks like the nylon 'socket' of the ball and socket joint has gone awol. Looks like the same as my scriocco did years ago.

You can normally buy all the linky bits from your local friendly VAG dealer. Sometimes they're not that expensive either.Having said that, I had to buy one of the little Audi roundels for the middle of one wheel and it came to £7. FFS.

Cheers chaps (not you Nick!) Yes have posted the same up on the Classic Audi forum too, no takers yet, though I might ask here as well.

Mine & m'colleague Mr Leyland's Humber's exhaust was held on by string for a while. Until I got pulled by the Old Bill. 3 points.

I used some electrical cable to hold the rear end of the exhaust on one of my escorts. Didnt get noticed till MOT time, (at which point he welded me a new bracket on the 'zorst' and supplied me with a new rubber for £10) Terribly nice of him...
