Ginetta dies (boo) Lives (Yay!) and dies again (shit) Ideas?

My poor G26 is going through a personality crisis that has seen more deaths and reincarnations than Jesus. Or Ripley from Alien.Anyway the problem seems to lie with fuel delivery. The two-litre Pinto is not a complex beast and I hope that the fault can be sorted with a minimum of Shekel. The car ran beautifully up until a few weeks ago; a persistant misfire reared its ugly head on the way back from Mersea Island. This could not be ignition related as its already had one of those and I cured it with a load of new parts. The misfire coincided, strangely enough, with the tank getting low on petrol. Therefore my thoughts turned to fuel issues. I stripped the carb and cleaned everything. It's cleaner than a clean thing and everything worked so well that Weber himself would be proud. The float is not sticking, the chokes open as they should and al the jets are clear.Unfortunately, however, the float bowl was low. This resulted in the odd situation where the car ran fine over 3,000 revs and not at all below. I could start her up by mashing the throttle and turning the key; but the engine would die soon afterwards. Then the battery went flat. To rectify this I changed the points (again) and put in some more electricity. Today the car ran as normal for about half an hour, started misfiring again and has now expired.Investigation has pointed to the fuel delivery side of things. The engine has a mechanical pump driven by a cam in the block. The original car builder, in his infinite wisdom, neglected to fit an inline filter betwixt the tank and the pump. There just isn't one there at all. My theory is that 22 years worth of unfiltered slime has clogged the sediment filter inside the pump and it just doesn't work that well any more. I suppose the car just about runs at high revs as the faster working of the pump mechanism is just enough to supply a bit of petrol. To solve this a Facet electronic unit seems like a good option. With a filter, naturally. The Ford unit cannot be repaired, and is bound to cost more than a superior solid state item. What does the Auto Shite Maaasiiiiive! Think?

I personally wouldnt go for a facet pump as the ones ive seen seem to pump continually ( better for systems with a return to tank pipe ) and are quite noisy , you might need a pressure reg with these as well as they tend to pump quite high pressures , id go for an SU pump , just get the correct one though , they do push and pull types ( engine or tank end fit ) with differing output pressures for both types , im guessing 2 to 2.5 psi would be ok for you , burlen fuels in salisbury do SU pumps new , both electronic and points controlled , not cheap though , or a scrapyard job may do as they do rebuild kits with all pasts available , hence me using them . if going for a leccy pump just make a blank cover plate for the old pumps position.

New pinto pumps are about a tenner from motor factors...also check the fuel pick up pipe inside the tank as there is a small filter on it that blocks quite often as well, if you want I can send you a pump as I have dozens of the things or take your one off and reverse flush and manually pump it to see what pressure you have ............

Better option than my complete waffle , il go away

I'm currently having problems, the occasional stutter while driving at any rpm, under load or not.

Is it points ignition? If so, did you set the dwell angle correctly? The points gap can be right and it'll still run like a bucket of shit if the dwell is out.

Don't think it can be this. It ran perfectly up until a few weeks ago and pulled strongly up to the redline. Idled well too. Thanks for the mechanical pump suggestions. I'll try that first.
