Anyone know about stereos? Especially Volvo ones??!!

I've got a pony old cassette player, Volvo badged in The Moose at the moment, but was looking to replace it with this:

and this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT

so I can play cassettes and CDs...none of the shops I've looked in seem to sell Pioneer/blaupunkt/amstrad(!) whatever stuff like that now; it's all CD/MP3, and I'd like the choice.

I should add, that thers a gap above the existing unit, which I assume makes the "double" DIN slot so the new one will fit.

Also, does anyone know if upgrade speakers were made, I remember buying some for my old Astra; made by Pioneer I believe...

Thats my point..will it fit?

Will the changer be compatible, and

Does anyone know a bloke who can fit it without having my trousers down?

Sorry its a bit of ramble...

While people are getting their address books out, anybody know who can repair cassette stereos? I have at least 4 pioneers we took out (mostly for chewing tapes) but can't get them repaired any more. Can't even get them period, and I would like to fit them. Had to just shove one of em in the hole in the dash of the escort the other week, no wiring, just wanted to fill the gap!

That stereo you are looking at was standard fitment in my old V40 and 850 and already has a CD player as well as cassette. IF going in the T4 then it should be straight swap, wiring et al. A lot of later Volvo stereos were made by Alpine I am told

I've got that one fitted in my S70, good sound quality (with the standard speakers), and most features you will need.

It'll pop straight in. Four connectors in a T5 I think. I had the one out of mine a couple of weeks ago to clean the laser.Piece of piss to do, they actually have handles that pop out of the front to remove 'em with. See those two slots on either side, push 'em in with your thumbnail, handles pop out. Swap the units, plug in, enter the code on the new unit and Robert is indeed family related.2 minutes, tops to fit the CD / Tape headunit.

No harm in checking the mechanics yourself – what have you got to lose? Hook your machine up to a car (or most likely van) battery with the lid off in good lighting conditions. I can't overemphasize the good lighting bit - it's half the battle. Shove a tape in you’re happy to sacrifice and then look carefully at the mech in play mode:Powered or manual loading? Has the cassette fully loaded into the mech or stopped somewhere just short so things aren’t quite engaging as they should? If you’re happy it’s properly loaded look at the supply and take up spools. They should both be turning (only with a cassette in). Look for shredded / stretched drive belts, or gears with grease that’s gone hard. Don’t force them as they will shred teeth. Is the pinch roller fully engaging with the capstan motor shaft? Are both of these clean? I use a fibre glass pencil to clean capstan motor shafts and rubber roller restorer on pinch rollers. Heads should be cleaned with isopropyl. Are the tapes ok? They really don’t like long term storage in a damp car / garage. Wind them all the way back and forwards a few times to even out tension and let them and the head unit acclimatize. There are a few specialists around if you’re really keen but they’re not cheap. Unless it’s a really rare Nakamichi or something I’d have a go yourself! :D

That's a good idea. Only thing is I do get bored with projects, and they don't get done. If it can't be done in a day, it won't get done

Cheers, I'll slap a bid on...
