XUD / shite friendly garages in Forres

A family member with a 1.8D XUD in a Romahome has properly cooked the engine and is having trouble with:

a. finding sources for a replacement engine (apparently so cooked it needs more than a skim and a head gasket!)

b. finding shite friendly garages who want to help.. place it's in now only wants to fit a reconditioned one..

I can't believe it's that hard to find a good normally aspirated XUD anywhere but I suppose they are pretty old now. I'm wondering if she's just not found the 'right' garage yet..

Understandable they will only fit reconditioned.

If they or anyone, obtain a second hand one and it fails, on fitment, or in the next few months, they will get the blame.

Would also say if the original engine is as bad as you say, it may not be accepted in exchange.

Sorry no help.

They’ll not want to fit an engine of an unknown quantity, that said most ‘reconditioned’ engines are scrapyard units that have a coat of holts wheel silver. A genuinely reconditioned engine isn’t cheap. The supply of decent used XUD is likely to be slim, maybe buying one that’s in a car and running maybe way forward, perhaps something that’s just failed the test on welding etc.

I have a good friend with his own garage who takes on strange projects as well as run of the mill jobs. He is currently fixing my Cobra and my L200. He is also a Citroen licker, runs a 205 daily and has a Turbo 2 in restoration. He does a lot of weird French car repairs and might even have an engine. He is very reasonably priced but he is not quick as he always has too much on. He is just outside Stonehaven. If that is any use, let me know and i will pass on his details.

Yes, totally understand about unknown s/h engines.. still she's not the type to unreasonably slate anyone local as she lives there now... just wants to be a free spirit back in her Roma..

Very helpful about Caledonian Auto Salvage, etc  - I've passed that on...

Got to be worth doing as Romahome's seem to hold their value..

Also, maybe post ShiteKnight a PM? Based in Fife, he may know of / have a suitable engine. Am guessing he hasn't seen this thread yet.

Would be good to get the Romahome going again.

I did have a suitable engine around 6 months ago but don't have anything now. My thoughts would be to look for a complete running car going cheap something along the lines of a 306.
