Toyota Corolla T-Sport FTP

So tonight i bought a 2003 Corolla, seller advised slight rattling noise when revving but car ran ok on test drive. Bought for the massive sum of £250 but on the way home the rattle became diesel loud and the car decided to stall at low speed, it also flattened it's battery without any alternator indication.

Anyone had any experience with the 1.8 VVTI engine or advise anywhere (cheap) in East Central Scotland that could have a look.

Disappointing thing as she's MOT;d till November and in not bad nick

Hello. Is it definitely a T-Sport? If so it'll say VVTL-I on the cam cover  and have an 8200rpm red line on the tacho.  I'm in Fife and have just broken one of these (but am keeping the engine).

I also have experience of the lower powered 1.8 1zz engine as found in MR2s and other Toyotas which can suffer from oil burning issues which can lead to failure if they run out of oil...

Drop me a PM, I'm near Dunfermline

That sounds much more like the 140bhp 1zz, rather than the 190bhp 2zz.

Replacement lumps for the 1zz are cheap and plentiful. If it’s actually a 2zz, there’s a good reason why the car was £250! I bought my last Corolla T Sport for a touch under £300, but that was without MOT, and was ridiculously cheap.

Bargain, we were happy with ours at £600 with a day's MOT. Which it passed of course!

If it is a T-Sport then they're not as prone to failure, but any engine will if not looked after.

It was silly cheap, for sure. I managed to source a Celica 2ZZ ECU for £60 as well. I’m still REALLY annoyed with myself for selling them! At least I still have the MR2...

Aye, we got a Celica ecu for £50 with keys because it was just an old car in the scrappies. There's a healthy market for breaking MR2 parts, as evidenced by the fact we've just paid £200 for the gear linkage from a 6 speed MR2 which is needed for the swap...

£200 for the linkage? I've missed a couple of cheap facelift cars recently - looks like I should have bought them to break!

Yeah, absolutely! If you see a 6 speed MR2 in a scrappy then grab the linkage of it to make some pocket money!
