OK you so called “Shite Expertsâ€Â! This is the Challenge you were waiting for!!!...

As part of my extensive research into Rootes Group Arrow series: http://www.PaykanHunter.com I am getting ready to announce, unless somebody in this forum can proof me wrong, that the Arrow Series was the most rebadged car ever in the History of Automotive! And this should be no surprise really, since Rootes Group were the masters at the art of “Badge Engineeringâ€Â!

Rootes Arrow Series was sold under 7 different names:

Hillman: Hunter, Minx, GT, GLS, Arrow,…

Humber: Sceptre

Singer: Vogue, Gazelle

Chrysler: Hunter

Sunbeam: Arrow (USA & Canada)

Dodge: Husky (South Africa only)

&

Paykan (Iran)

Your immediate reaction to this would be Fiat 124/Lada/AutoVaz/….. But I have counted and I think it comes to 6, can you prrof me wrong? I say GO ROOTES!!!...

The Shite Challenge is ON NOW!.......

What car has had the longest production run (apart from the Beetle)?

I think you've actually missed one, wasn't it sold in South America as the Plymouth Arrow?*

*My brain might just be playing tricks on me. Maybe I'm thinking of the Avenger..

Edit: ADO 16 is 7 aswell....

In which case, Innocenti counts as a brand though the others are duplicates, means we have a 3 way tie on 7 :D

For sure is your Brain! The Hillman Avenger was sold in the USA as Plymouth Cricket, is that what you were thinking?

So Far a 3 way tie on 7! Rootes Arrows are still Holding on!!!......

Posted

I know about the Cricket, I thought there was a seperate version sold in South America, but I think I am confusing it with the VW/Dodge Avengers

Posted

Shit, Hillman Avenger matches 7 - is there another...?

Plymouth Cricket

Hillman Avenger

VW 1500

Talbot Avenger

Chrysler Avenger

Dodge 1800

Sunbeam Avenger

Class! only on autoshite.. Good find, Barrett

And I'm not sure (even if it doesn't count) that tying with the first two suggestions classes as "winning"...

Challenge Update:

Ok then.... We are not counting any 3-Wheelers, so we got a 4 way tie on 7:

Austin Mini

Morris Mini

Wolseley Hornet

Innocenti Mini

Mini

Austin-Morris Mini

British Leyland Mini

Rover Mini

Authi Mini

Have I missed any?

Edit yes I did, Leyland Mini.

Oh, and Austin-Rover Mini

Posted

I thought Dauphine too as that was a Renault, Alfa-Romeo, IKA, Henney, Willys... also a FASA and a Kaiser, but I can't find any evidence that FASA or Kaiser-Frazer actually sold the cars under their own names? Anyone have any Ideas on that one...?

Funny, I was just compiling the same list. 12 names, or 9 if you discount same name twice (like Austin Rover, while counting austin and rover separatly)

Could be 10 if anyone has proof that Wood & Picket sold minis under their own name....

That raises an interestion question, lots of companies sold minis as XXX mini, do they all count? If they do I guess you can add Downton, Crayford, Buckle, Radford, Broadspeed, S&A, Rob Walker.... and probably a load of others...

Edit: and yes, the W&P was sold as the Wood and Picket Mini

it's gonna be an 80's/90's yank from GM or Chrysler - the 80s and 90s were the great years of badge engineering and in the US it got seriously out of hand

I'm going off what would actually appear on the V5, so Austin-Morris, Austin-Rover, British Leyland and Leyland all appeared at some stage during the Mini's life. In fact, thinking about it another 2 did - BLMC and also Leyland Cars.

My Hooper Mini although built from a new shell is still logbooked and listed on the heritage certificate as a Austin Mini Cooper S. Only Wood & Picket I had was listed as Austin-Morris.

Wouldn't like to hazard a guess at any of the other specialist builds.

Also note I'm only going for anything that uses a Mini shell, so have discounted Mini Marcos and Mini Gem etc.
