Disco trouble HELP!

Not me, there are some guys on a charity rally to Mongolia. They are currently in the Germany. They have a 1996 ES v8i (with LPG) Auto disco that very recently had a new tank. Here's what's up.

odgy petrol feed has us once more in a motel. Waiting for the Landrover dealer to open somewhere about 50 miles west of Dover.

They had the tank flushed and found loads of crap in it including bits of wire. They got on their way again, then today

Towed in last night, again AM. Dies every 50 miles, 1 hr wait to restart. Going to 3rd dealer tomorrow AM. If not fixed will have to bail.

Anybody any idea what it could be?

Not much of a rally if no bastards helping them... bit posh too. At a guess fuel line rubber in the tank - worth boshing an in line filter on? Try running without gas too.

I think he said it's out of LPG, thought that might be it. But I said it shouldn't matter what fuel they are on. I wondered if it could be an EFI prob?

Generally, I wouldn't trust a Discovery to get me to Maidstone, let alone Mongolia.

Funny you should say that, it broke down on the way to Dover.....

Anybody want this? Sounds like the blokes are going to ditch it cos it's cut out three times in 250 miles.....It's in Frankfurt......

Sorry if you know these guys Fred, but FFS :roll: "Hey guys, let's do a charity rally to Mongolia!""Oh, jolly good show! We can appear to be the caring, sharing type then!""Wait a second, what shall we drive? I'm not sure my Z4 is up to it""No matter, Daddy's gardener is getting rid of his nasty old Discovery"..... 200 miles later ....."I say, this is shocking. No aircon and it keeps stopping for no reason!""I agree. I'll send for Daddy's helicopter and leave this thing here for the pesants"I may have got the wrong end of the stick, but choosing a Disco for a charity rally seems a long way short of 'daring' and then chucking the towel in because it's broken down three times.....

I have to say I don't know them, I got talking by text to them cos speedbird from RR (who has taking a Capri and back) had a call from them just before he left, so I was trying to help them by text as much as I could. The guys with the disco are American. They flew over days before leaving. The Capri was 18 weeks in rally prep and has just about everything replaced. They bought the disco off ebay, and basically I suspect their prep was chucking their suitcases in the boot. It's EFi petrol and PLG, cos the Mongol government won't accept private diesel cars (madness), and yet on the same rally there is a Mk5 DI transit (commercials can be diesel) that's currently in Georgia! I am only trying to help

Yeah, and I salute you for that!My gripe is with this new fad of doing a 'charity rally' by buying something that has a 90% chance of getting there with zero grief, and claiming to be 'zany' and 'bonkers' by OMG not knowing how to check the oil.I might as well do a charity rally to Skegness on a bank holiday, that sounds much trickier. If people want my hard-earned, then they need to be going at least three times around the earth in something with less than 60bhp when new.

Well you know me, I have no idea why they didn't take a transit in the first place!

I know you are not having a go at me, but you don't have to donate anything, they were going to donate the car (if it had got there), but god help the poor Mongolian who ended up with it!

It's not a banger rally type thing, where more often than not the entrants dump their cars and fly home. The idea was the cars should be serviceable and be useful when they get to Mongolia.

The guys with the disco are actually 7th out of 35 in the donations list!

There are worse cars in that I "know" someone who is doing it in a suzuki (I think it is an alto) an the preparation compromised of ummh, fitting a roof rack and buying some jerrycans! Bit of a shame these guys had to give up in Germany though!m0rris

Well they have yo yo'd from ditching it in Frankfurt to getting going and are now in Austria, probably further by now (I hope!)

Is this the same chazza razza thing that "Skamanfrank" is attempting to do in a Hillman Imp? I was happy to sponsor that lad for it, on account of him eing a decent sort, and clearly deranged to attempt such a journey in Linwood's "finest"...

Metal wire in fuel tank (electrical wire/coil wire/gauze wire)? Is it running on LPG and switching okay, or just using petrol?I'd say it had nothing to do with the tank or fuel and it's a coil/temperature problem.
