Brake pipe flaring tool

I must have got lucky with the cheap-ass flaring tool I have, as it seems to produce perfectly acceptable flares, and will do cupronickel no problem at all, and has had a good stab at steel lines in the past (although they do look a little malformed.. still seal though)

 

I find the trick to getting a decent flare is to *not* use the side with the slight countersink on the clamp hole. If you use the "back" of the clamp with a sharper edge, the flare seems to form more evenly and sits in the tube bolt more squarely.

...well Ive dredged this up from the debts, as yon Audi avant I daily failed its test on some 'small potato's' stuff like ARB links n a 'perished rear brake hose'... the ends were rotted where the hose meets the Union on the steel brake pipe end; the unions 11' completely flaked to nothing on tickling with the wire brush head on the drill; no hope of getting that off... so long story short I'll have the nip that off with the grinder, replace the fitting & union to fit the shiney new brake hose...

 

I have the Sykes-Pickavant kit above (somewhere), but its not going to be mush use as there is an (upside down) U shaped loop/ bend about an inch from the union, where it tucks in under the chassis rail, so I don't have the room/length of straight line necessary to use the Sykes-Pickavant... I could iron out the end, n remake the bend afterwards, but I cant see that being a success...

 

Im thinking I might buy/borrow from my mate, one of them 'bar'/stocks type cheap flaring tools, as they look slim enough to do the job; I think I attempted this years ago - on a mk4 Golf - heating up the pipe end and using a cheap kit... but I cant really remember how that worked out, as it was just another mk4...

 

ANYONE ANY SUGGESTIONS??

 

I don't want to be relacing the entire line to ABS pump or whatever n having to do a vagcom laptop ABS pump bleed cycle as this always seems to end in misery; buying/replacing ABS pump with second hand ones etc

this one works very well...check if you need sae or din flares , i would go any cheaper than that

 

if money is tight they re sell for good money as long as you keep it tidy 

 

I've used a cheaper version of this on a Tranny steel pipe.

Worked well.

I've got one that looks to be the same. It's not the cheapest, but it works well and is good for working in confined spaces.

I'm pretty sure the Audi will be DIN flares not SAE. This tool as previously mentioned will produce perfect flares on steel pipe on the car.

 

It'll fit in really tight spaces too as witnessed 12 months ago when I had to splice new ends to all 4 pipes going to the balance valve on my CRV tucked right town at the bottom corner of the bulkhead. Flare a new union on to the cut back pipe and then used a female to female union to join on a new section of cunifer line.

cheers for all the advise n info; If my mates brake flaring kit looks like something that came out of a Christmas cracker, I'll try to chase down one of the above kits in the local 'factors; Ive only got 5/6 days left of retest period, n cant gamble on the long wait/lost/'has been delivered to Hy Brasil' by mistake etc etc E-bay /courier experience here..
