SCCON Midsummer Classic Run 2009 - Picture Review

SCCON = Sporting Car Club of Norfolk, they do the usual MSA affiliated competition stuff, and once a year put on this non-competitive drive through the Norfolk countryside. Been a couple of times in years gone by, when I had the 240K, now it was the turn of the Laurel in full family mode. Route changes from year to year and is always on good, quiet roads - this year's was 90 miles or so, 100+ cars I believe took part.

As we were in a fairly modern car we didn't see some of the oldies until later in the day. So, this is what we saw in the car park beforehand:

Fairly early.

Great colour. Fortunately out of the owner's earshot, my daughter said this looked like a toad.

Posted Image

One of the few other Japanese cars also doing it.

Owner of this published a motoring magazine of which many of us have professed fondness for (older issues anyway). No, I don't mean Jalopy...

Apart from the US-spec bumpers, this Fiat was rather nice I thought. Had the pleasure of following it for a while.

These two were together all day. More on them later.

Unless there are some sneaky engine/suspension mod's, stock-as-a-rock RS1800!!! Well, apart from the towbar. How much must this be worth? A regular on this event.

Was hoping to get a photo of the Laurel next to this, we were scheduled to run with them but didn't end up seeing much of it through the day.

Several of these doing it. A cruise around Norfolk must be a piece of cake for them.

Drove in convoy with this for a while, nice little 1980 time-warp.

Posted Image

My boss's not particularly shite 1938 Riley (forget which model).

Posted Image

Actually took a picture of my own car (I usually forget). This was at our picnic stop at Oxburgh Hall. The children loved it all.

Mrs SL thought this caravan should appeal to us here.

Mazda 323 was an interloper. Car right at the front is a 1910 Stanley, steam powered. The children were amazed and fascinated by this. Bowled along quite well at 30+.

Another nice period grouping. The TR7 stopped quite sharply, causing the Capri to anchor up rather quickly, then accelerate off with a nice V6 sound (and a bit of smoke).

At the end of the day we all ended up at a steam museum. Nice Mustang.

Trio of Saabs.

Posted Image

Amazing how different early ones of these look with the low-set headlamps.

Fabulous 1959 Imperial. Regrettably I didn't see it on the move all day.

Lagonda with a nice bit of patina (perhaps a bit too much on that rear corner).

Another couple of cars which I was sad not to have seen on the move.

The Stanley.

Ambulances visiting the museum. The old one has been a previous spot in my usual thread.

Hmmm.

Again, previously posted as a spot. Shame it's just sitting there.

Anyway, a great way to spend Father's Day and very pleasant to see these old crocks on the move.

Hey i'm sure that yankee ambulance used to belong to Perkins Engines till about last year! They had it for their Occ health dept, now been replaced with a Skoda Roomster  ACE pics SL! Looks like a good do. Whats the motor magazine connected to the Lancia then?

Mr Scruff's got it right! Ian Fraser, Car magazine. Looks like he's getting on a bit now, was hoping to say hello to him but he clearly sussed that and managed to evade me for the rest of the day. According to my boss, he has a rather desirable collection of cars. He lives round this area, which I remembered from the address that used to be on the magazine masthead.East Anglia had a fleet of those GMC ambulances, they had issues with them (weight/handling?) but this one must have avoided the cull.Edit: While many of the cars were 'proper' classics and perhaps of limited appeal here, it's great to see the more unusual/scarce/desirable ones actually in motion, doing what they were designed to do. With various stops the order gets mixed up, and it's fun seeing who we end up in convoy with. Sometimes we'd drive past houses where people would be in their gardens waving to us, the children loved that.

Excellent - a true hero of 70's and 80's motoring - I remember he had a lush L-plate Ferrari Daytona and he wasn't scared to give it some beanz and drive to the other side of Europe.
