this lot went from our company this week

they move castings on the roads late at night to try and cause as little congestion or upset as possible, it left our works at 11pm...

the casting originally weighed in at 580tonnes but once we had removed the heads and other bits along with matierial lost through machining, it finished up at 340tonnes (you wouldn't want it dropping on your foot  )

any more heavy stuff in peep's photobucket???

What the hell is that lump for? And do you have to pay the police for that type of thing? I love seeing these types of thing moving about, they look epic.

stationit costs a heap for the police escort but it's essential as even with the fuzz there you get some cretins trying their luck and you really shouldn't try it on with vehicles of this size and weight cos they don't take prisoners :D the casting is for a massive press, we have a few at our works which will exert up to 10,000tonnes of force and we're hoping to get a super press which is a 17,500 tonner, but that's in the heavy forge, i work in the heavy foundry  john :P

Excellent. There really is something about Heavy Haulage. Maybe they should have one of these rigs going around the Silverstone Circuit - most blokes would probably find it more interesting than F1!

dollyyou should see it when they're getting into position for the road, they only attach one tractor unit due to the restricted space, when they start pulling the tractor rears up like a great stallion :shock: i have some more pics of the heavy plant at our place, i'll dig 'em out...john :D

I must have a dig for the pics I took of the gas turbine parts arriving with us at Ballylumford Power Station. As Station says "epic" is the word! The sheer scale of stuff like this is mindblowing.

We get some of them big heavy haulage trucks come in at the docks were i work, Often carrying trains and wind turbines.

We had a story a while back in the docks magazine with pictures of one of the booms from the giant quayside cranes getting delivered by road back in 1986.

Heres the article I've found online, although the pictures aren't quite as clear as they were in the magazine.

and to give you an idea of the size of these, This photo is the view from the top of one looking down to the quay.

That's really impressive that the MAN can shift 340t, presumably at a really low top speed :)

it only moved it on our property (around one corner), on the road, another MAN was attached to the rear and there was another following (in case of breakdown??)john

Some sort of tarmac-munching contraption. Gawd knows why we had it.

Mahooosive crane, also used for lifting out stuck 'dozers.

Part of a turbine arriving. The noise this truck made was amazing.

Similar (same?) truck carrying a stack ring.

That's what I call a hole in the ground.

Difficult to get an appreciation of size due to the shot distance, but these dump truck things were actually a bit frightening.

I hope y'all forgive my lack of knowledge about what these things actually are - I was only there to make sure all the computers worked!

I dunno what it is, but I have a real soft spot for bonnetted trucks - I thnk its because they are quite a rare site in the UK (or at least I don't see many). But something guaranteed to make me feel all tingly are the massive heavy load pulling trucks - especially the old Scammells A few years back I went to see the commercial vehicle run that goes from Bournemouth to Bath, and the sound of the Scammell (ex army tank puller I think) was simply amazing - almost trouser wettingly good  I seem to remember the owner only did half of the run as the fuel consumption was astronomical, so I would guess with modern fuel prices it'll be hardly used.

Question:What does STGO Cat x mean? And what are the different categories? My mate's grandfather used to drive artics, the company he worked for had a Volvo F16 (I think) with STGO on the front and it was used for all the really heavy jobs.Think the biggest thing I went with him for was half a house, one of those modular pre-build bungalows. Overhung the low-loader by a couple of feet either side, took it into residential london smacking roadsigns and traffic lights as we went. And then as they were craning it off, it got 5ft into the air and the straps snapped, sending it crashing back onto the low loader. Jump? I shat myself, I was only a couple of feet away :)

I see, thankyou. So basically it's an exemption from certain aspects of roadworthyness, cos there's no other way of doing it.

Is that DAF 95XF in Allelys livery?Recognise it from when I was into trains, they seem to be the number one choice for moving locos around...

Yup. They're based near Redditch. Used to drive past their yard quite often so I always have a wry (= sad anorak bastard's) smile when I see one.

a massive rig called at our place (sheffield forgemasters) a few years ago, it was so big that there were ladders to climb on to the bugger and a platform that led all round the front end, a mate asked if the road tax was very dear so i told him to go up and look at the tax disc...

off he went up the ladder at speed, the rear view door mirrors stuck right out from the door and he bashed right in to it :oops:

nearly broke his flaming neck  , he didn't bother looking and went and sat down for a while to come back to his senses :D

here's a 50tonne ladle of molten steel being transported in to the foundry on a KAMAG...
