Anyone with any experience importing a car from EU?

Any recommended transporters?

Is dealing with DVLA the usual pain or is it another dept?

Do insurance companies load a LHD model?

Transport-wise I can collect if need be.

Re importing - I have imported a 2013 Toyota Prius from Japan which is more of a challenge than importing a car from the EU I would say as I had to take for an IVA test being it under 10 years old etc etc. I believe when registering a car from the EU it is simply a paper pushing excercise. You will need the V55/5 form from the Dvla (request one of these online) then £55 registration fee (which includes the cost of the log book) and 6 months or 12 months tax. Rather fortunately with the Prius and I suppose why I bought it was that the tax was £20 for the year so just did that.

So to recap -

£55 reg fee

6/12 months tax

Nova Document - this is basically a reciept from HMRC saying that you for paying the import duty and vat on the car - again you might not need this what with the fact the car is already in the EU - query this

Old reg document from Belgium

Invoice for the car

Certificate of conformity (may need this but look into it) - this is for type approval

Fresh MOT certificate for the vehicle - this is done on the vin number because obviously it doesnt have a uk reg yet!

Completed V55/5 form

2 weeks later...bish bash bosh and you are sent a letter with your reg number so head straight to Ebay for a set of numberplates to kick that off whilst you wait a few more days for the log bool to arrive. I say get your plates from Ebay because you are not having to show the log book (which you don’t have yet)

Don't think you need any certificate of conformity

Yes you could well be right - i wasn’t sure being the fact the car is coming from within the EU. Double check this,

You must do a NOVA even if it is coming from the EU, certificate of conformity is needed on newer cars but certainly anything pre 1980 won't need it. I am not sure if they have to take the number plates off in Belgium before selling so best to get it transported. Other than that all straight forward. Try shiply for shipping quotes but there are not many doing European stuff any more as all the ones I have used in the past have packed it in now as it wasn't worth the hassle.

If it's a car that came offcially here there'll be no problem with coc

Only if it's summat weird do they possibly inspect it

Ps insure on vin no drive home - even from ripen it's less than 200 miles to Rotterdam or Dunkirk

I wouldn't worry about driving it in Belgium, their police are very very kind and they invented the Waltzers

They do. If you're dedicated to the cause, you can buy temporary "X" plates from the transport authority offices in Brussels that last up to a month and cost 75 euros. You can then legally drive your new acquisition back to Britain !
