Datsuncog's Heaps: Sept 2023 - Another Year's T-Met Exemption Certificate...

Datsuncog

Recommended Posts

Rightyho then...

The weekend was mostly spent levering off the shonky doorframes I fitted in a rush seven years ago, giving me many hours of chiselling, scraping and sanding to curse my earlier laziness... MDF stop bars attached with Gripfill proved, in retrospect, a very poor DIY decision and a right old ballache to remove...

post-17915-0-77051800-1528712197_thumb.jpg

New actual timber bar attached with nails has proved significantly quicker and more accurate (albeit noisier) to attach, so now we have new non-warped doors in new non-shonky frames, and the doors close again.

Nice.

But amidst all the splintered fibreboard and paint flakes in my eyeballs, time was also made to take some more diecast snaps.

Some of the following have not been posted previously; many have been posted up but in less-than-ideal group pics. So they're getting their own posts now, and priced to clear.

As before, all prices are inclusive of UK postage. If you just want one, that's cool - but if you're after a couple of models, discounts will apply to reflect the reduced postage (it's the same price whether I'm posting one model or ten, by and large - worth bearing in mind!).

So here we go again with Part 2 of the Great Diecast Clearout!

(1/43  MB Dinky Sherpa Sport for scale - not sure the Jeep's actual scale but it's probably about 1/20 or thereabouts)

Not in bad nick, though the grille and wheels have regrettably also benefited* from the Datsuncog Silver Pen school of hyperdetailing.

May well come off with thinners, mind.

I hung onto this one for much longer than my other 1/18s (mostly disposed of around 2010) as it had been a gift from my folks after the 11+ results came out in February 1991. But... I think I'm ready to pass it on now.

Despite being in a series of attics for the past 21 years, the white plastic bits on this Cooper have gone somewhat yellowy; not sure whether there's a quick fix for this or not. Still a nicely proportioned model; LHD and French plates for bonus oddness.

Yes, the n/s headlight does like to fall off a bit. This is inevitably what happens when you get Frenchmen modelling BMC chod.

Probably the model that held my childhood 'best car' title for longest.

I'm still not 100% sure I want to get rid of this one, but I'm fed up not having anywhere to display it properly. No matter where I put it, it looks wrong. So I think it's best for it to find a new collection to be part of.

I obtained this one at a significant discount as it arrived in my local model shop (and former workplace) damaged in transit - the baseplate had broken and the centre section was still screwed to the packaging, while the shell and all the other bits were banging around loose inside the box.

I superglued the baseplate, and put it all back together again, before displaying it for many years. But it was a far from invisible repair.

post-17915-0-50417300-1528714670_thumb.jpg

There's some surface marks to the roof based from its original, eventful journey, and the aerial has gone AWOL. But it's still a nice model, and I daresay could be polished up nicely.

Again, these seem to attract reasonably substantial pricetags on internet auction sites.

Bloody hell, this is a rough one. Like many real 1100s, it comes under the heading of 'brave restoration'.

There's not many parts you could even strip off it, to be honest, though the casting is in good enough shape and the bonnet's still there. Flexomatic suspension seems a bit wonky, though.

I had great intentions for this one; the idea was to restore it to resemble my grandfather's real Consul Classic.

I was undaunted by the fact the A-pillars were missing, and so I bought a box of Milliput and set about scraping the old paint off with a modelling knife, which went about as well as you might imagine.

Then I ignored it for ten years.

And then Vanguards released a Consul Classic in exactly the right colour as Cog Sr Sr's real one, so I went and bought that instead.

post-17915-0-23154700-1528719787_thumb.jpg

One of the 70s Transits with the revised grille and fewer opening bits than the earlier versions; this was the unhappy subject of my 12-year-old self's experiments at model restoration.

I found this at a toy fair at school when I was 11 or so.

I later bought a small aerosol of Revell red paint from the model shop, with the intention to make it all lovely again.

I spent hours with a modelling knife getting the old chipped yellow paint off, then sanded down the bare metal shell.

Then I put masking tape over the windows and wheels (hey, that's what masking tape's for, right?)

And I sprayed it. Very, very poorly.

After a few coats I peeled off the masking tape, to find a load of red paint had gone down the back of it.

So I unscrewed the baseplate and took the glazed section out (why the ever-living fuck I hadn't unscrewed it before painting is anyone's guess), then left the windows to sit in a jar of white sprit for a few days, to get the paint off. After all, that was the technique my father used on paintbrushes.

I came back a week later to find the glazing had now turned opaque and warped, while the red paint was still all over it.

In desperation, I took out my trusty Tamiya silver paint pen (as seen, liberally, on just about every friggin' model on these pages) and carefully* painted the windows silver, the bumpers and all, and reassembled it.

Then I threw it in a box and never looked at it again, cos it was RUBBISH M8.

Y'know, if this one doesn't sell I might be tempted to chuck it in a bucket of caustic soda, get replacement glazing and a rear door from Steve Flowers, and have a crack at doing it properly this time. It really is a decent casting, not that far off 1/43, and I'd love to have a LWB Mk1 Transit in the collection.

Hmm.

£7 posted, £4 to add to a box. Though I'm now feeling quite torn, unexpectedly.
