That's all very well, but if I then crash and the car is clearly worth no more than a monkey could they not claim that I've deliberately misled them when filling in the insurance details?

Nah makes no odds what you paid for it. They'll try bottom book to pay you out anyway but it's you start at £150 value they won't give you anymore than that, start at £1500 and you may get £6-700 back. Happy days.

They wanted proof with my old transit that I couldn't get another for the £1000 I valued it at as he started looking on the trader saying he could get one for £5-600. I pointed out mine had electric windows, central locking etc knowing these were rare features on a tranny of that age and the cheapest alternative was £1200. They knocked £200 off for high miles etc, fair enough.

If doing ^this^ why not just insure a 50cc moped or something.

I hadn't though of that, could maybe work. It's not that I want to own a "modern" car anytime soon but I am just worried if I did decide to get something and couldn't get it onto a classic policy it would cost a lot for the first year. I will certainly be more diligent about getting quotes before buying a car in the future as normally I assume it will be fine and get quotes after purchase which could backfire on me in future.

Just to answer the question that nobody is asking: yes.

Yes, trade policies have also gone through the roof. My quotes have when compared with a couple of years ago anyway. Seems everyones doing it these days. And making claims.

I think car insurance prices have gone up across the board due to a change in the accounting rules about how compensation payments for people who are injured badly enough to require lifelong care are calculated. This in turn is due to insurance rates having been 0.5% or less for the last 10 years. I'm sure insurance prices will go back down when interest rates eventually rise  .
