Hull - Göteborg as well.

Of course after Brexit the last few remaining ferry services will stop altogether.

FFS... three pages to decide upon a vehicle & a route. Will there be another 10 pages about what to wear?

Just fucking do it.

Twice I've been to Austria on a bus in the last three years.

It went France, Belgium, Holland, Germany then Austria.

Rather annoying number of text messages as you pass through the borders.

I haven't checked the map, but that doesn't seem like a straight line to me.

Maybe it is? Like when you fly to America, you pass over Greenland...

There isn't really a straight line- Been looking at my options for next week and it's either up to Brussels, down through Germany again and into Austria, or down through France and round Switz.Took me ages to try and find some rural roads, taking in Lux for a tank of deezil and some fags. Finally decided to head down towards Annecy then over the big hills through Switz and Italy then up. Although this is subject to weather and FTP's.

Buying an old Opel is really something to consider. Look for an Ascona B, Rekord E or Commodore C (Leave the only existing black Senator A in C-spec with S-pack for me!). These are cars which only will win now and tomorrow.

I dove to southern Poland once in a ten year old espace, I stopped two nights I hotels though.

I own a Sherpa that some crazy charity workers drove all the way to chernobyl!

Just didn't want to reach for the top shelf. (There's a white Commodore A GS 4-door on Rostyles at a dealer's in the neighborhood which seems to be for sail maybe.)

Why don't you make it really interesting and plan to take the XJS? Could be the "thing" to get it up and running-and what a cruiser!

Steve

Obvs choice indeed, as an XJS is the perfect trans Europe express, but my one is befookered, and like to remain so until after the trip date.

In the spirit of this forum, you are, of course, correct.

So the obvious choice would actually be a Kadett E 1100 in Papyrus Beige.

Unless I find a car that will fit in the boot of whichever car I am travelling in, I am not buying a car.  I am still dithering about the choice of car.  Head says Rover, heart says Lancia.  Maybe the Dolly should be a contender after all.

Berlin, BTW, is perhaps my favourite city in continental Europe.  As New York is to America, so is Berlin to Germany. That is: not really in Germany.  Berlin is Berlin.

Posted

With the only difference that New York is about as entertaining as Milton Keynes by night, just with fewer cultural events.

The car to use is the Rover, of course. Or the RD125, which could then be strapped onto the roof of the car you buy.

In Germany I somehow prefer Dresden. Neustadt is my kind of place.

I'm that decadent :D

I may go via Dresden to Prague, and then go via Nuremberg on the way home.    Both good stops on the "Hey, Nazis, eh? " tour.

I may see if I can sofa surf with a friend in Paris on the last leg.

The Rover is edging it at present.  The Lancia is only a 1600 and is therefore a buzz box, and it will still be a relatively unknown quantity, reliability wise, by late July.  The Rover has, HGF apart, been reliable for two years, it has just had some major skilled mechanic attention with fresh oil and all that, and it is a smoothy.  Also fat Geordie Martin is fat, and he will be coming with me for the Berlin to Prague leg.   The Rover is roomy.  The Lancia is SMOLL.

Posted

Technically it doesn't matter which car you use, car is car, you jump in and drive it across Yeeropp. Or to the fucking Himalaya.

Or any other godforsaken shithole. To take the Rover would go down very well with the Berlin milfs, though, whereas the Lancia

will make them preceive you merely as some small crime pettyfogger, hence my suggestion to take the Rover, not the Lancia.

And forget the Dollysprint. You'd be pissing blood before you reach Helmstedt.

This is sounding more like a fucking wheel bolt removal / future R20 collection thread with every new* bit of advice that's offered.

Just bastarding well do it, and stop pansying around with "Ooo, should I wear the chiffon frock? Perhaps it's too early in the season for a snood", etc.

He IS doing it so maybe stop telling BV to DO it?

And to be fair wearing chiffon frock would require quite a bit of discussion in my mind...

You have a knack for areas where they speak nasty dialects.

You can't wear a chiffon frock without a ruched shirt and britches.

That's why I asked to open a specific thread in the off section.

I knew I had this kicking around somewhere, from a £20 1979 Audi 80 that I brought home in the 1990s iirc...

I don't understand why one person is being so shouty on an amiable chat thread about an ambling tat drive to some European cultural blah points.

The Rover it shall be, as the XJS simply won't be available on time.    The last mega Euro trip that I did was London to the Abruzzo and back in a 1970 Jensen Interceptor.  It had one minor ignition faff on the last night of the trip (in Paris), and lost its windscreen wipers near Milan (this did not matter, as apart from a furious downpour that was in progress when the wiper motor broke, there was no more rain on the trip thereafter).  I added up the petrol bill for a laugh, but the laugh was somewhat strained.    The SD1, not being a V8, is capable of 30 MPG or better on a cruise, but this will not happen if I get some bits of unrestricted autobahn, as the thing will sit at 110 MPH very happily.  I wonder how I know that.

Posted

lol, hardly shouty.

Still, good to see you've finally agreed to hammer a trip to the shops over your continental road trip :-D

Ostalgie Fest at the Sinsheim Museum next Sunday. I may go and see Concordeski and some Trabants. Been close by before, but neverbeen..

All choices wrong.

UMM is the only choice. Yes, you'd have to set off a week earlier, and a noise-cancelling headset would be mandatory, but waaaaaay cooler than the Rover or the Lancia. Probably not wear chiffon though.
