Due to a less than overwhelming clamour for an undesirable car with a knackered engine (my attempts to advertise it as a whole car have produced a single response which faded away pretty quickly), this is being scrapped so I'm pulling off any useful bits I can this weekend before the hiab cometh, assuming I can get the key off my mechanic before he closes tonight.    

 

I'll pull off the obvious, easy bits like battery, mats, parcel shelf, radio etc. and I'd like to get the wheels off it due to 3x new tyres, although that might not be feasible, locking wheel nuts providing an additional challenge to having it sat on the ground in a semi-private car park where it's currently residing - where there's a will there's a way though!  I'll also try and get the ECU out of it.

 

Anyone else particularly want any bits before it goes?

Started stripping a few useful bits off this yesterday before it goes, found a full set of spanners in the spare wheel well, they seem to be a bit crap quality but I'm not complaining, they've already been useful!

 

 

I keep finding little issues here and there unsurprisingly, there's some rust creeping in around the tailgate hinges and the interior looks badly worn for a car with 57k on it, it's not been looked after.

 

My mechanic and I were both curious about what was actually wrong with the engine so I whipped the cam cover off to have a look.  All looked ok, so I moved around to the cam sprockets.  Off with the belt, the timing covers actually go for a few quid on eBay so they'll be saved.  Timing was spot-on so it's not that.

 

But hang on, what's this?

 

 

 

 

This is the opposite end of the engine to the noise but it definitely isn't good, there's a wonky seal on the front cam and the surrounding area is coated in a grey paste consisting of oil and fine metal filings.  I'd guess it's had the top end refurbed and it's been done badly, perhaps partially seizing which might explain the difficulty it seems to have turning over and the compression sounding a bit off when it's trying to start.  Odd, but anyhoo, it's had a chance, can't save 'em all.  

 

Given the state of the interior and the rounded-off bumpers, even if the engine was fixed and it had the rear tyre, brakes and exhaust fixed for an MOT it's probably a £250 car on a good day so would never be a particularly worthwhile endeavour.  These are dirt cheap even in spotless condition, there's some excellent tidy bargains about so this one's not going to be missed.

What is the paint code for it?

If the O/S/R door is the same shade as mine and in good condition I would be more than happy to buy it.

Along with the alloys.

Any idea on price for them?

*Edit* change the word but to buy, I don't want to headbutt any Rover door thank you.*

Don't worry about the parking sensors, my head gasket has gone.... Rover life...

bad times...fixable though!  Quite a straightforward job really if the head's saveable.  I do have a brand new cambelt and tensioner in this car that've barely been used, you can have those if you do repair it.

And it's gone. The wheels and one rear door were rescued for TRW and I filled two crates with whatever I could get off in the space of a couple of hours with a socket set and some screwdrivers so it's not gone to waste.

 

First car I've ever scrapped. I felt horrible seeing it hoiked into the air and then squashed on top of a barried Astra, the driver had a trainee with him operating the crane and it took a few goes to get it in the right place. Amusing to watch though.
