AMC Rebel Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 The crying pumpkin kindly took me on a date earlier, then for tea at my sister's. When I came out I noticed it stank of diesel. Lifted the bonnet and cranked it up and diesel is absolutely pissing out of a sort of blanking plate thing just below the injector pump. Anyone know what this is and how to fix it? Sorry I have no pics but didn't have anything to take one with.
AMC Rebel Posted May 29, 2017 Author Posted May 29, 2017 Found a pic on t'internet of the part concerned - it's this one Diesel is pouring out of the cover when the engine is running.
twosmoke300 Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 If you can access it then it's just two bolts a plate and a gasket to change . Most bosch diesel centres will sell you one . Change all the bits as the plate can get damaged . Our local bosch place said it's air ingress in the fuel system that is the root cause of the leak
jonathan_dyane Posted May 29, 2017 Posted May 29, 2017 There is an O ring (and other gubbins) beneath the plate. It would appear to have failed...
AMC Rebel Posted May 30, 2017 Author Posted May 30, 2017 Sorry - I am being a bit crap at this - does anyone reckon there's a way to do a temporary bodge for the 5 miles home? I'm just trying to sort out the logistics of going back to it (parked in my sister's street) , getting the part off (so I get the right replacement) then getting a new part, putting it on and getting it all back here (and trying to do it all while I am supposed to be here working and I have gazzilion other jobs to do). I wondered about trying to trap a bit of plastic under the cover thingy?
AMC Rebel Posted May 30, 2017 Author Posted May 30, 2017 Just remembered I had a dream about fixing this last night!
Rusty_Rocket Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 I can't think of a good way of temporarily slowing the leak.. a funnel tied underneath it going into an empty fizzy pop bottle may do it but beware the front axle/ steering shaft! Also, remember the pump is completely full of fuel when you undo the bolts..!
Guest Hooli Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 Depends how much pressure is behind it, a bit of cornflakes packet might make a temp gasket.
AMC Rebel Posted June 2, 2017 Author Posted June 2, 2017 Thanks all, now mended after I decided to do the logical thing instead of mucking about and went across the road to my trusty motor factors - 58p for two O rings (one spare) later I had what I needed and 20 mins (including travel time) later it was fixed and no longer causing environmental chaos and risking the lives of local moped riders. I think this must count as my cheapest repair requiring new parts for a while! The actual cause seems to have been that the plate had vibrated loose (the engine is real vibrator - not that sort Cecillia) and allowed to O ring to slip out-
Rusty_Rocket Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 The TDi engines do crash about a bit, especially at idle. Glad you sorted it out! Ps- I can smell the diesel from here!
twosmoke300 Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 As i mentioned earlier - the root cause is air ingress into the fuel system . It makes the pump vibrate more maybe ?
AMC Rebel Posted June 2, 2017 Author Posted June 2, 2017 As i mentioned earlier - the root cause is air ingress into the fuel system . It makes the pump vibrate more maybe ? That all makes sense - fairly sure I do indeed have an air leak somewhere.
Guest Hooli Posted June 3, 2017 Posted June 3, 2017 I bet it's the metal pipes on top of the tank where they curve forwards. It was the standard place on discos & they are pretty much the same thing. I'm pretty sure they normally went in a place you can get to by removing the cover under the back seats/boot floor (I forget exactly).
