Range Rover Exxon Valdez - help needed from 200 TDi/ Bosch Pump experts*

The crying pumpkin kindly took me on a date earlier, then for tea at my sister's.

When I came out I noticed it stank of diesel.

Lifted the bonnet and cranked it up and diesel is absolutely pissing out of a sort of blanking plate thing just below the injector pump.  Anyone know what this is and how to fix it?

Sorry I have no pics but didn't have anything to take one with.

Found a pic on t'internet of the part concerned - it's this one

Diesel is pouring out of the cover when the engine is running.

If you can access it then it's just two bolts a plate and a gasket to change . Most bosch diesel centres will sell you one . Change all the bits as the plate can get damaged .

Our local bosch place said it's air ingress in the fuel system that is the root cause of the leak

There is an O ring (and other gubbins) beneath the plate. It would appear to have failed...

Sorry - I am being a bit crap at this - does anyone reckon there's a way to do a temporary bodge for the 5 miles home? I'm just trying to sort out the logistics of going back to it (parked in my sister's street) , getting the part off (so I get the right replacement) then getting a new part, putting it on and getting it all back here (and trying to do it all while I am supposed to be here working and I have gazzilion other jobs to do).  I wondered about trying to trap a bit of plastic under the cover thingy?

I can't think of a good way of temporarily slowing the leak.. a funnel tied underneath it going into an empty fizzy pop bottle may do it but beware the front axle/ steering shaft!

Also, remember the pump is completely full of fuel when you undo the bolts..!

Depends how much pressure is behind it, a bit of cornflakes packet might make a temp gasket.

Thanks all, now mended after I decided to do the logical thing instead of mucking about and went across the road to my trusty motor factors - 58p for two O rings (one spare) later I had what I needed and 20 mins (including travel time) later it was fixed and no longer causing environmental chaos and risking the lives of local moped riders.

I think this must count as my cheapest repair requiring new parts for a while!

The actual cause seems to have been that the plate had vibrated loose (the engine is real vibrator - not that sort Cecillia) and allowed to O ring to slip out-

The TDi engines do crash about a bit, especially at idle. Glad you sorted it out!

Ps- I can smell the diesel from here!

As i mentioned earlier - the root cause is air ingress into the fuel system . It makes the pump vibrate more maybe ?

That all makes sense - fairly sure I do indeed have an air leak somewhere.

I bet it's the metal pipes on top of the tank where they curve forwards. It was the standard place on discos & they are pretty much the same thing.

I'm pretty sure they normally went in a place you can get to  by removing the cover under the back seats/boot floor (I forget exactly).
