From memory the original factory colour was Beige Nacre 1384.  Originally the inner wings and engine pay were left in brown paint and you could see the code 1384 (I think it was) painted onto the inner wing just behind the left front strut top.

 

What Peugeot did was to paint all of the cars brown, and then they just sprayed the visible bits the final colour.

 

Well you learn something new every day. I wondered why my Talbot was brown underneath the white paint, this explains it!

I have sent a message to the seller asking him to ask the new owner to get in touch with me.  Given that i am the 604 registrar for CPUK it's not an unreasonable request.
