mat_the_cat Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 My Halfords charger is suitable for cars under 1800cc, but what is the problem with using it on a 4600 cc engine? Should just take longer to charge I would have thought? Yes - kind of. You may find that it's not actually able to supply a sufficient charging voltage at whatever current a larger discharged battery is drawing. Although it's not a hard and fast rule, and I would expect any charger capable of fully charging a typical battery for an 1800cc engine to be man enough to get a reasonable charge into a RR battery.
dollywobbler Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 Sorry. Misread the post! It's been a long day. I'm going to bed.
SiC Posted November 11, 2017 Posted November 11, 2017 The boost packs rely on charging the car battery pack a bit to help take the cranking load. It's why when you connect a pack or jump leads, you should wait 15 seconds to 30 seconds or so to get some juice from the donor pack into the flat car battery.
PiperCub Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 Thats what I did.. Got a Maplins generic one when they were discounted to £19.99 about 8 years ago, about 2 years later the battery died so binned the 18ah one fitted & put a 22 or 24ah sealed bike battery in, & it does ok. Still starts anything up to 2.0 perfectly 6 years on (struggles with a completely dead Jag 4.0 V8 though). Also fitted a 48smd "dome" light instead of the torch thing, & put a 99p chinese twin USB socket on it as well as the fag lighter socket. Yes, I'd thought about this too but wondered how easy it would be to find a replacement battery that physically fitted properly in the box. I think it's stated as 17 or 18A/hr which sounds about right. I'll check Maplin and CPC later, if I can score one for under £30 then I'll be happy to stay with the old Clarke 900 unit I've got, more than that I CBA and will buy a new compact one. I don't actually 'Need' one of these new units but the old one dying seemed a good excuse to buy one!! I'll take the thing apart next week and have a measure up.
mat_the_cat Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 They're usually 17Ah and very common, but you can get one which is the same physical size but 22Ah. The Ah rating is not as important in this application though, but the corresponding increase in CCA makes a huge difference. I can crank a cold 3.9 litre V8 even with the vehicle battery disconnected! EDIT - this one:https://www.tayna.co.uk/Yuasa-REC22-12-CyclicGolf-Battery-P9548.html
barmatt Posted November 14, 2017 Posted November 14, 2017 Decided to treat myself to a jump pack the other day and it's just arrived. Obviously not used it yet but build quality feels good and the clips are solid metal so shouldn't melt. I'll post findings when / if I use it.
