I'd ahve thought that was an ecu fueling fault if its not getting the right fuel then the engine will r8un hot resulting in a smellof oil anyway get it on a diagnostics machine sounds bad

well on the way to diagnostic test today the car ran the same got to the centre turned car of it refused to start fella in centre said it sounded like fuel problem so we are going down the filter / pump route for now then try to get it back for diagnostic test

if i remember correctly you can clean these with Carba and Choke cleaner or electrical contact cleaner Wynns Carb and choke cleaner was more affective on my Sapphire 2000E MAFNot too sure about Subarus tho

Sierras (and the mondeo that I learned this from) have a 'hot wire' MAF - a wire is heated to a certain temperature, and then the amount and temperature of air blowing over it from the intake into the airbox cools the wire by a certain amount, and the ECU measures how much current it's taking to keep the temp constant so know how fast the air is moving. On the Mondeo it was a tube suspended in the intake tubing, looking down the half-inch diameter tube you can see a horizontal wire.Don't try to clean it by rubbing it with anything, you'll break it. It's like a filament in a bulb. Instead just squirt carb cleaner at it and you'll see it turn from black to gold as it cleans off, and makes it more accurate. As said this might be no help at all if the Subaru doesn't use a similar system but it might be worth a crack.
