Painting over clear coat

Today I decided while the weather was nice to repair a small ding on my front bumper and must say the colour match and repair really does look spot on.

The only thing is I noticed when looking at it in the sunlight that I can still see a very Small area of show through from the primer from the the repair and I've now clear coated the applied the metallic base-coat and dried it with my girlfriends hairdryer.

The thing is I know no one else will notice it but it will bug me so I wish to flow in a bit of base coat over the top before giving it another coat of clear coat but can I go over what's already been painted without taking it back to primer as I really don't want to muck the repair up.

is your question....can i add more basecoat ?

yes you can re basecoat it , let it dry for a few days then give it  a light key with some 1000 or grey scotch pad

You would need to key the clear i think so the base stuck. I sanded with 2000? grit when i painted the mirrors on the Kia.

Cheers.

I will let it dry and give it a light key with some 2000 wet and dry next week sometime.

I don't want to do the whole area again just a patch about an inch square so hopefully it should flow in to the repair ok.

I thought I did the damage to the car myself but couldn't remember hitting anything and haven't really used the motor and when I took the foglamp and trim off I found out the clips had been bodged before I got it so I just never looked around the car properly before buying it.

I was to busy looking to see if it was rust free rather than looking at the dents I suppose lol

Cheers for the advice giving the clear coat a quick sand with some 2000 wet and dry worked a treat before giving it another coat with the basecoat.

I'm more than impressed with the results I've paid a fortune out before for worse professional repairs in the past and I'm now having trouble spotting the repair as I lost the line under the trim and it worked out it cost about a tenner to repair.

I paid 99p for a new trim panel on eBay £7 for the base coat from halfords and I had some old pound shop primer and lacquer sitting in the shed which I put in the oven before using and used a two pack glue which repaired the foglamp clip as the fog lamp was also knackered.post-9282-0-61779200-1482575144_thumb.jpeg

I should of done before and after pictures as the side of the bumper was scraped up quite bad.

That looks great, looking via a mobile but I can't see a repair, all looks very clean.

I scraped the corner of the front bumper of my Z4 on a high kerb and have thought about having a go rather than getting it done, it's Titanium Silver which I've heard is a pain to match so a little apprehensive!

My theory is if the colour match doesn't match up or if I make a complete balls up of the job the the worst that can happen is it ends up in a paint shop anyway.

I've also have an old Zed and have done rattle can repairs to the wing mirrors and bases but when I used correct colour from halfords it just wouldn't give the right depth of colour so I just went down the local pound shop and bought some gloss black and no one will believe I've repainted them as I was told that there's 3 different blacks on the Zed and it was the perfect match but I've also done the mirror base on this one with pound shop Matt and it's the perfect match once I gave it a once over with a bit of compound.

At the end of the day it's all about prep I find once the repair is done it's always worth ghosting the primer a couple of times to check for imperfections and flat back before applying the basecoat also the cans end up going in the oven for 15 minutes before I use as I find they spray better and in between coats I go over the area with a hairdryer to help with the drying time.post-9282-0-46781400-1482666580_thumb.jpeg
