Grumbly gear change.

The gear change on my Toyota has got progressively stiffer since I've owned it; getting it into 1st and from 1st to 2nd is quite hard now. I'm guessing the gear linkages want greasing or maybe some linkage bushes are getting worn? Not done this before so any advice appreciated folks.

Does it make a difference whether the engine is running or not?

Hummm, good point but I don't think so. I'll check again tomorrow. Don't think it's a clutch problem.

Ah yes. I've been meaning to do this on the RAV4 for about five months now.

Gear oil has been changed; one of my first jobs to do on any car I own as it's easy yet rarely bothered with. Same goes for diffs.

gear linkage wear usually manifest itself as 'sloppy 1st n second, n 'cant engage reverse' - takes some bullying into get reverse etc, followed later down the line by 'gear lottery' - clutch released; backwards or maybe forth she goes, no telling lol... but theres usually lots of 'in use' tell tale signs before the 'stir the pot' lottery of sloppy gear change issues... how well are you 'finding reverse' gear??
