Can I drive a car if i just bought it without tax as long as it has mot and i'm insured

No, you can't. You are supposed to tax it as you should have the documents with you. However, reality is often somewhat different.....

You can cover your arse to a certain extent by taxing it online. You'll need the document reference number from the V5 and you still won't get a tax disc (immediately) but at least if one of those roadside scanners spots you, the car will show as legit.

...if you tax it online, the scanners will let you past but you still run the risk of a £200 fine for 'failure to display' if an actual bobby spots you.Best all round if you can either get the seller to tax it at cost, or buy it, get to a post office and tax it. I've driven in the same circumstances before and it's quite bum-tensing every time you see a police car.

Ah, I miss the old days when you could easily get away with driving a motor without T&T back from buying it. The old bill certainly used to have a more relaxed attitude to it in the late 80's. I wouldn't dream of chancing it these days.
