Gearbox oil question.

Emptied the oil out of the Saabs gearbox- very...Black. Haynes says it requires 'Castrol Hypoy light'; anyone here tell me what the modern equivalent is?

From some surfing, looks like any EP80 or EP80W90 is a suitable replacement. The important bit is EP (extreme pressure) as Hypoid cut gears develop this pressure and any gear oil not formulated to withstand the pressure will break down and damage will result.

So Comma or Castrol

Done get it wrong. I have a sneaking suspicion that me using the not quite correct oil in the Freelander box is what has killed it so few miles after changing the clutch.

What Freelander 'box?  And what did you use?

TD4 with the Getrag box I believe. Should be MTF95 and I used basic 75w80 or something like that. It now chatters and whines badly.

I slung MP80 into the secondhand Nissan box and it seems to be fine, hot or cold. It reckoned it ought to have been given 75w/90 but ECP had a special on Triple QX MP80 gear oil so I opted for that instead. It says it is API GL-4 equivalent and hasn't exploded yet.

It was that. And I couldn't find out the difference between EP and MP, though it says its fine for gearboxes where EP is specified.
