Vince70 Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 I've noticed since getting my Bmw 318ti out of storage that it seems a bit down on power After driving my Z3 which has the same M44 engine. The car doesn't seem to miss and went through the mot with flying colours last week but I plugged my £10 draper code reader in and it's come up with P0340 crankshaft position sensor. It's quite a pain to do (but the part is cheap) as the intake manifold and throttle body etc have to be removed so I just wondered if anyone had any luck cleaning a sensor up.
Kiltox Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 Worked on my Trafic van, was covered in shite assumedly from the ageing clutch/flywheel - but if it's a pain then I'd just replace it given you'll need to remove it anyway
320touring Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 swap it out. once they start to get wobbly it's a slippery slope to a desolate rain drenched, dark carpark and a non starting car purplebargeken, beko1987, Tamworthbay and 1 other 4
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 swap it out. Replace it even. They're not hard to do and only the upper part of the inlet manifold needs to be removed. Most M44's have the sensor at the back of the block but very early ones are on the front pulley like the M43 and M42. Real fun is replacing the CPS on the Wanktronic N42/46. Much dismantling and swearing because it was designed by an idiot. Vince70 1

Vince70 Posted September 7, 2016 Author Posted September 7, 2016 I seem to be gaining more motors rather than getting rid lol... The BMW convertible I've just bought will be going shortly though but it's not going far as again once driving it home I popped into my fathers and now he wants it (one of these day I will get too keep a motor lol)So I've got put the headliner back in that one and renevo the roof and give it a service before handing him the keys. Thanks for the help I will order a new sensor tonight as it should only take an hour or so to fit and I want to give the car an oil and filter change anyway as it hasn't been changed in a 1000 miles lol but apparently the sensor can be changed if the filter is removed without taking the intake manifold off if your lucky or have small arms.
