How many miles left?

Every Fiesta mk1 and 2 I've had have been lying bastards when it comes to how much petrol is in them. I know you can get both of them to the bottom of the red section and still drive round for a bit* so that's good enough for me :-)

As for the mk6 when the light is on its about 30 miles and sadly that gets tested quite a bit.

Does Germany have no hills? My BMW has such an undamped fuel gauge it has about a 2 litre swing (one nobble on the gauge, there's 20 nobbles and it's a 45 litre tank) depending on the incline. My 1303S was the same, but that was the 70s so excusable. You'd think they'd figure putting the sender in the centre of the tank would solve it.

Ran out of fuel once whilst trying to avoid running out of electricity with the gauge cheerfully showing 1/4 of a tank but that was in a Volvo 740 and the instruments in those are usually just for decoration. In fact it's years of old Volvos that made me highly suspicious of fuel gauges so always brim it at the 1/4 tank mark or whenever the trip counter reaches and uncomfortably high number. Did once get from Perth to just west of South Queensferry in the AX on virtuLly no fuel but it's not something I'd make a habit of.

The Dolly 1300 runs out when the gauge says empty(ish), although this can be altered by sharp cornering or inclines. The 1850HL runs out when the gauge reads empty, or a quarter full, or anywhere in-between, the fuel light may come on but that's at the car's discretion. I find it easier to just not let the car run that low...

The Civic I'm not sure on, it seems to go along quite happily with the fuel light aglow but I don't really want to run it dry...

My Diesel Scenic has the trip comp that tells you how many miles left, how many MPG's etc.

I have found that if the remaining miles to empty get to around 55 the display goes blank and the fuel light comes on. This is always long after the needle reaches the bottom of the gauge. but i have a few times carried on and achieved a further 20 miles or so before stopping for fuel and never run out yet.

In fact the needle is usually at the bottom of the red when the remaining range is still at around 120 miles.

Personally, i only let it run as low as 70 miles remaining and then fill it up.
