Veg oil (new) - where's the best/cheapest place?

Having a chat with a mate today about running our hacks on veg oil (his is a '98 Mk3 Golf, mine's a '96 Pug 406 1.9XUD).

Where's the best and cheapest place to source reasonable quantities of it from? As in 20 litre or so containers. We don't really want to jack with used stuff so looking for prices/info on new.

I know a cash and carry is probably ideal (KTC brand is common 20l for £14 so 70p/l) but while I have some locally, I don't qualify for membership nor do I know anyone who does.

Any pointers or ways of getting membership of a CnC?

Tesco does a 15l for £12 offer, so 80p/l. Not a huge saving but still worthwhile.

Asda are usually £1 per litre. Might start running it again soon now derv is on the up

Or come to shitefest and put an order in

Anything much over 80ppl surely isn't worth the risks? Two or three hundred £ a year saved can soon be more than swallowed. IP seals can give bother, there are probs with air leaks owing to the bigger drag through the lines (which once started can be sods to eliminate) and mpg will suffer (so what's 80ppl isn't nearly as cheap as it looks), especially on the cheap GM Soya stuff. Then add more starter wear, the need for a tip top battery outside the summer season, glow plugs working well, risks of polymerising the lube.

When it's free or under 40ppl then it begins to add up, especially since it's then likely to be a waste product - fields which should be feeding the world aren't being poisoned with modern agriculture and soya crops just so someone can avoid paying tax on diesel.

Mine runs better on veg, idles quieter, pulls smoother etc

Its just easier to get derv at 7am on the way to work

I'd generally agree with much of this. My mate is looking for saving money as his mileage is pretty high but mine is much lower and I'm only really doing it to see what it's like (for the science if you like) while I've got a cheapo diesel hack at my disposal that isn't my only transport.

I've seen oil at CnC's that works out to 70p/l but that's the cheapest so far, I'd agree that anything much north of 80p/l isn't worth the bother/risk. I was hoping to get it for around 50-55p/l but that prob isn't going to happen. Used is an option of course but I cannot be arsed with the storage and filtering of it to save a few quid, again, not personally worth it in my case.

There are people on ebay who sell 'new, unused' rapeseed oil (much better in our climate) for under 50ppl, it's usually the dregs from a ship which has offloaded its oil cargo, or sometimes it can be factories which have cleaned out their lines, as it were. Great value if ykwyd.

Know what you mean about the 'science' bit PiperClub, I still remember the first litre of sunflower/rapeseed oil I tipped into the car at Sainsbury's, I was convinced it would knacker everything from the tank to the engine. I take it for granted now, and having seen the inside of an engine which has run on it for tens of thousands of miles, it's way better than the filthy 'diesel' stuff, provided the fuel supply system can cope.

It's worth remembering that properly dried and polished used oil is often better than new for cars so long as it hasn't been overheated (and so acidified), since food-grade oil isn't filtered nearly as well.

Tesco are ususlly decent for veg oil offers-see the pic

I'm hankering after another WVO runner.

at 35p/litre its cheaper than walking.

I'm also tempted to get a common rail (hdi) or a PD VAG lump and try it on veg mixes if they are cheap enough.

At 80p/l its a bit of hassle for little saving. that said, the resiliance to derv prices is a nice thing
