XUD Head gasket woes

Recommended Posts

Recently got an ex Shitpeas 309 diesel.

FOAD drove it back from Glasgow and the bottom coolant hose ruptured.

I've since changed this, refilled coolant using a bottle with bottom cut off in the expansion tank to raise water level above highest point.

There are small bubbles however still present in the bottle after a while with the engine running at idle. Big bubbles appear when I rev the car. How long should I expect to have to bleed this for?

I hope the head gasket isn't blown but I fear it is given the ruptured coolant pipe.

Any advice appreciated as the MOT is tomorrow and I'd rather MOT something without a blown head gasket.

Depending on design some XUD's can take a little while to get all the air out.. Having had several HGF on these they tend to go very gradually and will soldier on slightly pressurising for some time.. I wouldn't worry too much about a few bubbles - I'd worry more if the top hose gets really hard when up to temp / the coolant bubbles out of the tank / hoses..

Definitely not spraying out or foaming up, probably wouldn't notice bubbles without the bottle in place, if they take a while to bleed then maybe I just need to be more patient.

It doesn't sound good, however this is the bleeding procedure we use.

Funnel on the rad/expansion tank, open the bleeders on the rad top, heater hose and thermostat where fitted and fill the system, closing each bleeder once a steady flow of coolant cones through.

Once this is done, put the heater onto the hot setting, and put a reasonable head of coolant in your funnel, running the engine at a fast idle speed (2500-3000rpm) until it is up to running temperature, on an Xu it is unlikely that you'll get it hot enough to get the rad fan cutting in, so you are carefully feeling the top hose to see if the thermostat is opening.

As said above it can take a while, bit a proper bleed might make all the difference.

Blimey, no need to be so course about it.

Brutally honest answers are welcome.

My 360's MOT runs out on Friday and I was hoping to replace that with this for the time being as it does about double MPG.

If it's blown then I'd be as well getting the 360 MOT'd instead I think.

I probably won't bother fixing the HG, finding a turbo XUD is probably a better idea.

Jacking the car right up at the front can also help bleed it through.

You'd be best off buying a 205 xud.

I considered it, but 205 sized hatchbacks aren't my thing these days.

I think it's okay. Got it MOT'd and drove it a bit. Didn't seem to lose any coolant.
