Future classics?

Wish I could find top end W123s for the price they quote.  Or is that all they consider paying out.....?

The prices are hilarious, usually the case with these things though. I haven't seen a few of those at the prices they are claiming for a years. And you would think an insurance company would OVER estimate prices.

My W123 230E is tidy but by no means concourse and it's insured for £7.5k on an agreed value policy.

Pointless article.

Rover 75 will be one day, being the last of the line and a pretty well regarded car

Exactly my thoughts, way off the mark. For instance, in my case 205GTi & Mk1 MX5 - best examples are 4K & 3K respectively? OK, Where is that then? I know a few people who'd like to buy at those prices. Both of mine are on A/V's of 7K each. Neither has been that for years. Who writes this rubbish?

How old is that article? With the possible exception of the Audi TT, I would have said all of those are currenly regarded as classics, or have I missed the point. As said above, the guide prices/valuations seem to be all over the place

Agreed, no you haven't missed the point.

I'd say a couple of years old at least. Either that or the prices are for very average (condition 2) examples rather than the best which would be the best bet for keepers.

The article is dated Jan 2016. It states MR2 prices are £1500 to £3000. I would say that's about right for good to excellent condition cars but you can pick up average examples cheaper.

I hate the term 'future classics', because it's basically a bogus one. Everything is a 'future classic' unless you're some Vintage car Nazi. The phrase must be banded around these pointless filler articles more than anything else as it just requires some nice pictures of cars that most people have heard of and, if they're really putting the effort in, a couple of facts* from Wikipedia.

I think there is an ever increasing lag between cars being new and them being old enough to be 'of interest' or regarded as any kind of classic. it seems that 50s and 60s cars seemed to be regarded as classic material in little over a decade after they left production but 70s cars were not getting much interest until the 90's and 80s cars are still not widely regarded as being 'worthy' by many. So will 90s cars take another couple of decades to become interesting enough? ansd 21st century chod? I suspect many models will become extinct before their time comes and to a degree this may drive what become a future classic.

For example, mk1 MX5's are plentiful and have a pretty good enthusiast base and parts support but a contemporary like the Fiat Barchetta don't, so while the latter is certainly interesting it'll probably be a obscure footnote in sportcar history when there are still MX5s on the road in 20 years time. I think a lot of the good stuff may well die out before ever reaching classic status and that's if regulations don't kill them off anyway.

The article isn't too well researched for the individual examples, as already mentioned, I can't remember the last time I even saw a Fuego let alone saw one for sale!

Prices vary widely these days but I think some sellers are pushing the envelope to test the market, even on particularly poorly prepared cars. Prices don't seem to rise where there is a plentiful supply, 205 GTi projects can still be had for reasonable money but there are plenty to choose from on eBay. XR2's, that rot for fun, have the double whammy of old Ford tax and a dwindling population pushing prices skyward.

I reckon Focus ST170's are at the bottom of their curve currently and prices will rocket in two to three years, then again old Ford tax will apply.
