RustyNuts Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 So there I was with a nice volvo 5 pot engine and the cooling system just had to fail didn't it. Not much sign of damage over the last year so didn't worry too much about it and got on with the rust removal and protection. Jump started the car the other day and noticed the header tank was virtually empty. Shit. Sure enough there is liquid mud in the engine and mayo on the oil cap. Anyone got any experience doing the head gasket on these engines?
rantingYoof Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 I didn't think Volvo engines did the whole OMGHGF thing. My S60 has just started using coolant - requiring a top-up every three or four weeks. *IRRATIONAL PANIC*
rml2345 Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 It's not common but they will do a headgasket every now and then. Shouldn't be any harder than any other FWD.
RustyNuts Posted March 13, 2016 Author Posted March 13, 2016 I didn't think Volvo engines did the whole OMGHGF thing. They don't normally but like all engines if it's cooling system fails it can overheat. That's what happened to this one and it hit the top of the temp gauge. Gutted I was.. Had that gut feeling it would lead to a HGF
HH-R Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 I might be wrong on this but I'd say pretty much everything made in the past 30 years will suffer HGF if overheated because aluminium heads are much easier to warp, taking out the gasket with it when the overheat occurs.
RustyNuts Posted March 13, 2016 Author Posted March 13, 2016 Yup and that's what has happened here. What i was hoping for its some advice about how badly Volvo heads warp etc
HH-R Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 Sorry, was more in reply to yoof. I R just lazy with using the quote feature.
